Raul Austria Ternate, 74, known as “Lolo” to his grandkids, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 24, 2026, surrounded by his devoted and loving wife, Yolanda Angeles Ternate, and his only child, Kimberly Nicole Ternate Ding.
Raul was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend. He was married to Yolanda since December 31, 1992, and together they shared a life filled with love, laughter, family, and the simple pleasures that meant so much to him.
Born in Canlubang, Laguna, Philippines, to Felix and Isidora Ternate, Raul moved to the United States and spent most of his life in Houston, Texas. He worked as an electrician for Stewart & Stevenson and was known for his ability to fix almost anything. Generators, electrical problems, things around the house, and especially cars - if something was broken, Raul would figure it out. He loved tinkering and working with his hands, taking things apart, understanding how they worked, and finding a way to make them work again. His family could always count on him to try to solve whatever needed fixing.
Outside of work, Raul loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, chess, visiting national parks, and long drives. These hobbies, he passed on to his daughter. Raul also loved to cook. He made delicious fried turkeys for Thanksgiving but truly he was known for his unforgettable brisket. You could smell it for miles. Meals with his family were part of their happy memories -laughter, long conversations, delicious food made by his wife, smiles with his daughter- all gathered around their kitchen table- it’s what they loved best.
Raul especially loved being a grandfather - not only to his own grandchildren, Lucas and Liam, but to his extended grandchildren: Eric, Melany, Brayden, Ethan, Ava, Natalia, Leila, Felix, Mona, TJ, and Halle. He had a special tenderness for them and took joy in watching them grow.
Raul lived with Kennedy's disease, a progressive illness that brought many challenges to his life. Yet he never let it define who he was. Even in the face of those challenges, he maintained his good spirits, found happiness in simple things, and continued to love life. His resilience was quiet but powerful.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Yolanda Angeles Ternate; his only daughter, Kimberly Nicole Ternate Ding; his son-in-law, Alexander Ding; and his cherished grandchildren, Lucas and Liam Ding. He is also survived by his siblings, Alex Ternate, Oscar Ternate, and Roberto Ternate; his brother-in-law Dr. Herman Angeles: his mother-in-law, Rosalinda Angeles; his dog Peachy: and many extended family members and friends who loved him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Felix and Isidora Ternate, his siblings, Felix Ternate and Evelyn Ternate, and his 3 dogs Nikki, Cha Cha, and Eby. Raul will be remembered not for the illness he lived with, but for the life he chose to live and the family he loved.
Family and friends are invited to join in celebrating the life of Raul Austria Ternate.
