Raymond Eugene “Gene” Pratt (better known as Paw Paw to many nowadays) of Camilla TX was called home to our Lord on August 16, 2017 while undergoing treatment at St. Luke’s Hospital in The Woodlands. The reason for the quick exit you may ask, well the answer is easy: it is WAY BETTER where he was heading!
Gene was born on February 13, 1926 in Port Arthur TX as one of three siblings, the son of Claude and Louise Pratt. He grew up in Thorndale, TX, but was a long-time resident of both Houston and more recently the Camilla area of Coldspring TX, where he had many great neighbors and friends.
As a Navy Seaman 2nd Class in WWII, Gene acquired many skills and ideas that he would use and cherish throughout his life, but his greatest acquisition was the hand of his beautiful bride Carolyn (Cain) Pratt….whom he met at The Arcadia Ballroom in Solomons MD and to whom he was married for 63 years until her passing in 2008. Gene and Carolyn raised 5 children; Allyn, James “Jimmy”, Cynthia “Cyndi”, Brenda, and Melody.
Mr. Pratt was the owner and proprietor of Alamo Glass Company in Houston, TX for 60 yrs and the Director of Music for several churches throughout his life. Most recently he was an active member at First Baptist Church of Camilla. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved spending time fishing and hunting, and he passed those loves down to his children and grandchildren. But none of his earthly activities, interests and loves out shined his love of Jesus Christ, which was also shared and passed down to his family.
Surviving family members include his children Allyn and Mim Pratt of Sugar Land, Cyndi and Dale Bigger of Humble, Melody and Brian Benge of Deer Park, Rick Gerth of New Caney, Brenda Pratt of Louisiana, his brother Bobby Pratt and wife Cindy of New Waverley, as well as by his close friend and neighbor, Anita Williford. He also leaves behind, 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren and numerous nephews, nieces, and friends.
Gene is preceded in death by his wife Carolyn (Cain) “Grammie” Pratt, son James “Jimmy” Pratt, daughter Brenda Gerth, and brother Charles Pratt.
A memorial visitation will take place on Sunday, August 20, from 3:00-6:00pm at Brookside Memorial Park, located at 13747 EASTEX FREEWAY, HOUSTON, TX 77039. The funeral service will take place on Monday, August 21, also at Brookside, at 1:00pm and will be followed by a graveside service.
Flower deliveries will be received at Brookside Funeral home. Gene was very excited about what God is doing through the ministry of FBC Camilla and if you feel led, donations in memory of Gene Pratt can be mailed to PO Box 731 Coldspring TX 77331.
