Raymond was born June 3, 1936 in Silsbee, Texas to Luis John Sagstetter and Emma Marie “Babin” Sagstetter. He graduated from Silsbee High School in 1953. Raymond attended The University of Texas from 1953-1955, Lamar University 1956-1958, Texas Christian in 1959, and the U of H in 1963-1964. Raymond served in the Air National Guard from 1961-1964.
Raymond met Helen Kathleen Eidt at a Catholic singles dance, and a year later they were married in Natchez, Mississippi on October 28, 1960. Dad was a Petroleum Accountant and Auditor working at Austral Oil Co. Inc. and Inexco Oil Co. from 1960-1974, Tomlinson Interest, Inc. 1981-1982, BHP Petroleum (Americas), Inc. 1982-1989, and the Department of Interior, 1990-2001. Throughout his career he received numerous awards and was honored for his service.
Dad enjoyed visiting with good friends and his family, most especially with his four grandchildren who were his pride and joy. As a family in the early years he enjoyed camping, fishing, crabbing, and our family vacations. When the grandkids came along it was summer beach trips where many memories were made. Dad was an avid gardener and found great enjoyment working along side his wife Helen on the weekends in the flowerbeds, and garden. He loved growing his own vegetable garden all year long. He was most especially proud of his prize tomatoes, but grew everything from potatoes, green beans, and okra. He loved nothing better than sitting in his backyard grilling steaks, sipping a cold beer and eating his cherry tomatoes with a little salt. Dad was also a great cook (which he learned from mom) and was known for his barbeque and barbeque sauce which friends requested in a bowl by itself. Summers always included trips to the beach, crab and shrimp boils, and mom’s gumbo. Holidays were always special to Dad, most especially Christmas. He always made sure we had the biggest tree, biggest turkey, lots of Easter eggs (which we are still finding to this day), presents and always surrounded with family and friends. Dad was a history buff, and loved U.S. History, Government, and most especially Texas History. He often said he got his credits to teach history just in case the oil industry dropped, or he was bored after retirement.
In his early days Dad worked as a Republican Precinct Chair. He was a member of the Petroleum Accountants Society. Mom and Dad belonged to St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church. Dad worked and was Chairman for the St. Cecilia’s Octoberfest Bazaar, and Dance for number of years. Both he and mom also assisted running the Religious Ed program at St. Cecilia’s for many years.
Raymond Sagstetter is survived by his wife Helen Kathleen “Eidt” Sagstetter, his daughter Helene Kristi “Carter” Sagstetter and her husband Mark of Rosenberg, Texas, his son Karl Edward Sagstetter, and his wife Jennifer “Benfer” Sagstetter of Tomball, Texas; four grandchildren, Jessica Erin Sagstetter, Kristopher Stephen Carter, Jacob Allen Sagstetter, Mitchell Kyle Carter, sister-in-law Frances Sagstetter, brother-in-law Stan Smith, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
