Rebecca “Becky” Cook Brenham (81) of Houston, Texas was called to rest in God’s glory on April 2, 2024. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend, who captivated everyone who met her with her energy for life and infectious laughter.
Becky was born on August 18, 1942, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston to Georgia and Sol Cook. She was also baby sister to Mira Cook Golden. When Becky was a baby the family moved to Orange, Texas and then moved back to Houston when she was 6 years old in connection with her father’s work as an executive of Weingarten’s grocery. She graduated Bellaire High School and was very active as a Bellaire Belle.
Becky graduated from Sam Houston State University where, on the first day of school at a dance, she met and fell in love with her true love, Wayne Brenham, whom she adored and married in 1961. While in college, Becky joined Delta Zeta sorority, attended many dances with Wayne, and wrote all his college papers! They were married for 57 years until his passing in October 2019. They had two children together whom they adored, Greg and Sherri. Becky cherished weekends spent with many of their friends skiing on Lake Conroe or camping and tubing on the Guadalupe River.
Becky loved teaching and education and taught English at Pershing Jr High in Houston, and soon found her true calling positively impacting the lives of students with learning disabilities. In 1973, she formed her own business, Perceptual Education Therapy, and transitioned into her career as an educational consultant and diagnostician, where she provided educational assessments, therapy, and vision and hearing screening testing for almost 40 years during a time when resources for children with learning disabilities were not as available as they are today. She was frequently invited to speak about her career and experiences to younger generations of educators.
When she wasn’t spending time with her beloved family, she could be found with her sweetheart, Wayne, on their boat, Mirage, where they frequently entertained family and friends with many sunset champagne cruises.
The wonderful memories we have of her are innumerable. She was a fierce protector of her family and loved ones, and her impact on our lives will be carried in our hearts forever.
Becky is preceded in death by her parents, Georgia and Sol Cook, her parents-in-law, Fred and Edrie Brenham, her husband, James Wayne Brenham, her brother-in-law, Albert Courter Golden and her daughter-in-law, Diana Snow Brenham. She is survived by her sister, Mira Cook Golden; son, Gregory Wayne Brenham; daughter, Sherri Brenham Vargas and husband Leandro; Grandchildren, Scott Gregory Brenham, Lauren Elizabeth Vargas, and James Leandro Vargas; Great grandson, Jesse James Brenham; and her nieces and their families.
Visitation will be held Monday, April 8th from 6-8pm. Service will be Tuesday, April 9th at 12 noon, with internment at 1pm and reception from 2-4pm, at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home & Cemetery.
