Reynaldo John Herrera, 87, passed away peacefully on Tuesday May 22, 2018 after a recent struggle with poor health. Born in Cottage Groove of Houston, Texas on August 29, 1929 and one of nine children, he was the son of the late Jose Maria Herrera, and Maria Hernandez. As a child, he became a ferocious reader of books, a characteristic that lasted throughout his life, sometimes reading several books at once. He attended Sam Houston High School in Downtown Houston. As a teenager, he took up golf, a passion that inspired countless people around him. He was a member of LULAC Council 60 and helped organize fundraising golf tournaments for college scholarships.
He graduated from the University Of Houston School Of Pharmacy in 1953 and worked over 50 years as a pharmacist in Houston. His later years were dominated by his volunteer work: organized English program through Catholic Charities at St. Ambrose Church, an operator at the Crisis Hotline, and a researcher at the Holocaust Museum. In 2001, he was voted North Houston Leader’s Volunteer of the Year.
