Richard “Dick” Alfred Hoefle was born in Miami, Florida on the 31st of March 1911, to his father, Alfred Frederike Hoefle and his mother Anna Weighell Hoefle. He died peacefully on the 24th of March 2012, one week shy of his 101 birthday. His brother, Donald, predeceased him. Dick is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Liz” Spence Hoefle.
Dick lived in Miami until World War II erupted and he enlisted in the United States Navy. He spent the war years at Pearl Harbor and other bases in the Hawaiian Islands. After the war, he returned to Miami to join his brother in the family contracting business.
Dick enjoyed the out of doors. Seminole Indians guided him through hunts in the Florida Everglades. He later pioneered using swamp buggies to travel through and hunt and fish in those same waters. Dick remained an avid hunter, fisherman, and outdoorsman even after moving to Houston in the 1980s.
Dick received excellent care from Maribel Hernandez; the caretakers of Sid Gerber & Associates; his nurse, Patty Roberts and the Hospice team; friends, Carmela and Kelly Frels, and loving neighbors.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation from five o’clock this afternoon until seven o’clock this evening, Tuesday, the 27 of March, in the Library and Grand Foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
A private memorial service and interment service is to be conducted at a later date.
In lieu of customary remembrances, contributions in Dick’s memory may be directed to a charity of one’s choice.
