Richard Lee Kerr, Sr., 90, of Houston, Texas, went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on January 1, 2026, following a recent illness. Richard was born on October 29, 1935, in Springfield, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Nell; his parents, Norman Clell and Ruth Thomas Kerr; his brother, Donald J. Kerr; and his special friend in later years, Barbara Windmeyer.
Richard is survived by his children: Richard Kerr, Jr. (Laurie), Robert Kerr (Imelda), and Kristi Ritch (Mark); his brothers, Duane Kerr (Virginia) and Keith Kerr; and his sister, Karen Fowler. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Ryan Kerr (Kimberly), Mallery Heinrich, Andy Kerr, Kayla Rister (Bradley), Jessica Kerr, Matthew Ritch (Susannah), Jason Ritch (Myrah), and Drew Ritch; and six great-grandchildren: Travis, Emmalyn, and Grayson Kerr; Lane and Decker Heinrich; and Diana Ritch. He is further survived by many cherished in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Richard moved to Houston in 1948 and graduated from John H. Reagan High School in 1953. He proudly served in the United States Air National Guard from 1953 to 1959. Richard enjoyed a successful career in accounting, where he was known for his dedication and integrity. After retiring, Richard and Nell enjoyed traveling together. His favorite trips included cruises—especially to Alaska and Hawaii—as well as vacations to Europe.
Richard had a lifelong appreciation for running and faithfully attended the Texas Relays in Austin. He also participated in the Houston Marathon for many years. He deeply loved his family and supported his grandchildren at their various school events throughout the years. He especially enjoyed watching movies from his extensive DVD collection and hosting movie nights at his cottage.
Richard lived out his faith quietly but powerfully, serving as a Christian role model to all who knew him. He was a gentle, compassionate man who consistently sought to help others and reflect Christ’s love through his actions.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Harbor Hospice for their compassionate care during Richard’s final days, especially Destiny. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the National MS Society (www.nationalmssociety.org), in memory of Diane Bova Hester and in honor of Imelda Kerr.
While we grieve the loss of our beloved Dad and Papa, we do not grieve without hope. We rejoice in the promise of eternal life and in knowing that Richard is now rejoicing in heaven, reunited with his beautiful bride and resting in the presence of his Lord and savior. A memorial service celebrating Richard’s life and faith will be held at a later date.
