Richard Marmion Stinson went to his Heavenly home, surrounded by family, on Thursday, the 5th of March 2026, in Houston. Richard, a 10th generation Texan, was born on the 15th of November 1946, in San Antonio, to the late Eloise Rooke and Stuart Stinson. He was 79 years of age.
Richard spent his early years in Woodsboro, Texas with his beloved grandmother, Joe Ethel King. Richard attended St. Stanislaus College in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi where he played football and won the State Championship in shot put. After spending a summer surfing in California “in search of the perfect wave,” Richard went on to The University of Texas and earned a Master in Professional Accounting degree.
Richard began his career with the “Big Eight” accounting firms and specialized in international tax before going on to be a partner at Laventhol & Horwath, where he met his wife and future business partner, Jean Calloway. With Jean, Richard started Calloway, Stinson & Co. in 1980 and continued providing tax services until the time of his death. Richard enjoyed working and, as one of his doctors recently commented, was the “hardest working accountant I’ve ever seen.”
One of Richard’s most notable characteristics was his sense of humor. He loved laughing and making others laugh and was a favorite among little kids for his silliness and light-hearted spirit. Richard loved giving nicknames (all eight of his children have one) and making up silly songs. He did not sweat the small stuff and was not a complainer. Richard took setbacks in stride, often responding to reports of adversity with a simple, “bummer” before moving on to the next thing. Richard had a gift for seeing the big picture and not getting bogged down in the details. He was steadfast and could always be counted on to show up, one hundred percent of the time (and on time). As he was fond of saying: “the only way to be on time is to be early.” Whether for a school play or sporting event, Richard showed his children and grandchildren that he loved them with his constant presence and unwavering love and support.
Richard had a great generosity of spirit and gave freely his time, talents and resources. He loved Jean and, though sick in the hospital three days before his death, made sure that she received flowers for their anniversary. One of the ways Richard showed love to his children was through coaching their sports teams. Coach Stinson was a ubiquitous name in the world of Houston youth sporting associations from the 70s through the 90s. During that time period, Richard spent countless hours coaching every sport possible for all of his eight children.
Richard loved fishing and travel and was a great observer of nature and wildlife, often veering the car abruptly to the shoulder on road trips to share these moments with his family. Richard loved music, whether Elvis, Broadway, Big Bands, Gospel, he was always playing music and singing along at full volume.
Richard is predeceased by his brother, Robert Stinson and wife Janice.
Richard is survived by his wife of forty-six years, Jean Calloway; his sister, Susan Rooke and husband Glen Cook; his children, Charles Stinson and wife Michelle, Thomas Stinson, John Stinson and wife Diana, Robert M. Stinson and wife Mary, Randall Stinson, Catherine J. Schuetze, Sarah Stinson, and Mary Eagleton and husband Brendan; his grandchildren, MacKenzie Stinson, Emily Stinson, Lawrence Stinson, Helen Stinson, Eloise Stinson, Anna Stinson, Charlotte Schuetze, Catherine G. Schuetze, Benjamin Schuetze, Owen Stinson, Bailey Eagleton, and Winter Eagleton; and his great-grandson, Judah Stinson.
The family would like to recognize Richard’s caregiver, Jackie, for her love and support over the last six years. Richard loved his family and friends with his whole heart and will be sorely missed by all.
To quote Les Mis, one of Richard’s favorite musicals, “to love another person is to see the face of God.”
A memorial service is to be conducted at twelve o’clock noon on Saturday, the 21st of March, at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, 11140 Greenbay Street in Houston, where Rev. Matt Russell is to officiate.
Immediately following all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held in the nearby Fellowship Hall.
Richard’s lifelong friend, David Tanenbaum is to serve as an honorary pallbearer.
