It is with great sadness that the Seghers family announces the passing of their matriarch, Rita Mathilde Vandevenne Seghers, at the age of 74 years. She died Friday, May 18, 2018, at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, after a brave battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Dr. Victor K. Seghers, her two sons Conrad (Winifred) and Victor (Deborah), and her seven beloved grandchildren, Matthew, Andrew, Emily, Erik, Julian, Lauren and Gretchen. Rita will also forever be remembered by her surviving siblings, her numerous nieces/nephews, extended family and dear friends in both the United States and her Belgian homeland.
Rita was born on October 25, 1943, in Meldert, Belgium. In 1969, she moved to the United States with her husband and oldest son, and she became a resident of Temple, Texas, in 1973. She lived in Temple for 33 years before moving to Austin in 2006, and she was the owner/manager of Salado Woods Home Building.
She loved tending to her garden, cooking for her family, following tennis and politics, and encouraging her grandchildren in all their endeavors. She was also an accomplished painter, and she earned a Master of Fine Arts from Mary Hardin-Baylor while residing in Temple. One of her proudest achievements was also being a homebuilder in the Temple area, as she took pride in the quality and craftsmanship of the homes she oversaw and built.
At Rita’s request, only a private memorial service will be held with her immediate family in Austin, Texas, and her ashes will be spread in a bed of irises that she planted.
For those desiring, you may access her online obituary at www.legacy.com and leave comments, photos or memories in the guest book.
