Robert was born in Charlottesville, Virginia to Maggie and Robert M. Detamore on the 10th of October 1925. He proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII in France and Germany. Robert graduated from the University Of Virginia School Of Engineering with a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Robert had a long career with Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Corporation, during which he developed many close friendships and business associations. He first became acquainted with Transco when he was employed with Fish Engineering Corp. building part of Transco’s pipeline and held positions of increasing responsibility, starting as a Compressor Station Superintendent and ultimately responsible for the system-wide compressor station/pipelines, gas storage, LNG, cathodic protection and testing programs. He was considered to be one of the nation’s foremost experts in the design, testing, and operation of natural gas storage facilities including salt dome storage, depleted cavern storage, and liquid natural gas.
Robert consulted with International Gas Consulting after his retirement from Transco, and continued his professional relationships through involvement in POPS, American Gas Association, and the Transco Retirees Club. He had been a member of Willow Meadows Baptist Church for many years.
Robert was preceded in death by Audrey Detamore, his wife of 47 years. He is survived by their children: Robert and his wife, Cindy; Michael and his wife, Fran; Cathy, and Alicia; and their grandchildren, Stephanie de Jager and husband, Cobus; and their children, Evan and Jacques; Kristin Coolsen and husband, Michael; and their children, Sophia and Isabella; Emily Sparrow and her husband, Jason; and their children Colin and Marin; Brent and his wife, Megan; and their daughter Caitlin; and Brett and his wife, Ryann; and their son Cash. Robert married Hazel Collegeman in 2001, by whom he is survived, along with her sons, Richard and his wife, Mirjam, and their sons, Matthew and Michael; and Jimmy and his daughter Adrianne, son Aaron, and his daughter, Isabella.
Robert’s family would like to thank Denise Johnson, Encore Caregivers, and Compassionate Care Hospice, as well as Suzanne Slavinsky and our other friends for all of your kindness and support.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from two o’clock until five o’clock in the afternoon on Sunday, the 26th of January, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons.
The funeral service is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Monday, the 27th of January, in The Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, Rev. Matthew Vandagriff, pastor of Willow Meadows Baptist Church, is to officiate.
