Son of James W. & Eudora Hindman, Bob was born in Houston, Texas, January 11, 1927. He graduated from Reagan High School in 1943 at age 16, promptly applied for Officer Training in the US Naval Reserve, was commissioned Ensign and was serving on the USS Denver at the end of WWII. He was retired from the USNR as a Lieutenant (JG). Bob attended Rice University, University of Houston, and The University of Texas, obtaining his B.S. in Civil Engineering in 1947 and later, his M.S. in Fluid Mechanics and Economics.
Bob worked for the Texas Highway Department for a short time before starting his forty year career with Humble oil (Exxon). After his retirement from Exxon he embarked upon a new career as an engineering consultant and continued to share his expertise with others up until a few months prior to his death. He was a lifelong Presbyterian and most recently a member of Grace Presbyterian Church of Houston. Bob held memberships in several engineering societies and dozens of clubs and associations including The Explorers Club. He gave generously to numerous charities and funded many scholarships at the University of Texas, Rice University and other colleges throughout his life.
Bob enjoyed the theatre, art, ballroom dancing, and spending time with his family at their tree farm in Tenaha, TX, and was a 30-year member of the Texas Forestry Association. His love of nature, travel, and adventure took Bob and his wife Mary to many, many countries and all seven continents. Their adventures included penguin observation in Antarctica, walking the Great Wall of China, exploring the Amazon by boat, swimming with sea lions in the Galapagos Islands, whitewater rafting through the Grand Canyon, and feeding polar bears from an observation vehicle in Churchill, Canada. He and Mary visited most of the great art museums throughout Europe, Asia, and South America.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Mary Mims Hindman, parents, and sister Mary Ann. He is survived by his second wife of four years, Beverly Taylor Maurice, his son Flint Robert Hindman and wife Monique, daughter Heather Hindman Heath and husband Dr. A.R. Heath and three grandchildren, Laurel Hindman Heath, Alexander Hindman Heath, and Stuart Hindman Heath. One brother, James W. Hindman, Jr., and his children and their families also survive him.
Bob will always be remembered for his kindness, generosity, quick wit, and his ability to tell a good story. Life was an adventure to Bob and he was always ready to make us laugh with his retelling of ordinary and extraordinary events. He never forgot a face or a name. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
His family would like to thank the dedicated nurse's aides who cared for him so tenderly in his last months.
A service will be held Saturday November 12th at 11.00 am at Grace Presbyterian Church, 10221 Ella Lee Lane on the Sam Houston Tollway.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial to a cultural organization, scholarship fund, charity, or religious organization would be appreciated.
