Rodrigo Pallas Barrey, 83, of Sugar Land, Texas, was called home to the Lord on Friday, June 26, 2026. He was born on April 10, 1943, in Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, to Carolina De Guzman and Francisco Barrey.
Rodrigo was raised in Narvacan by his devoted mother, Carolina, and his grandfather, Agapito. He never had the opportunity to know his father, who tragically passed away during World War II before Rodrigo was born. As an only child during his early years, he learned responsibility at a young age through household chores and farm work. From his grandfather, he inherited a love for cooking, and from his mother, a gentle, compassionate heart. After his mother remarried, Rodrigo became the loving older brother to five siblings. He is survived by Berto, Maxi, Perlita, and Mario, all of whom he cared for with unwavering love and generosity.
Rodrigo never forgot where he came from. Despite his humble and quiet nature, his generosity left a lasting impact on his hometown. He faithfully gave back to his barangay by providing clothing, shoes, school tuition, supplies, food, medical assistance, and financial support to those in need throughout the year. His kindness was never motivated by recognition, but by a sincere desire to help others.
Music was one of Rodrigo’s greatest passions. Self-taught on both the piano and guitar, he possessed the remarkable ability to play by ear. During family prayer gatherings, his music filled the room and lifted everyone’s hearts in worship. He used his God-given talents to glorify the Lord and inspire those around him.
Rodrigo also found great joy in fishing. Being surrounded by nature and experiencing the excitement of each catch brought him peace and happiness. True to his generous spirit, he loved sharing his catch by preparing delicious meals for family and friends. His vegetable garden was another source of pride, and he delighted in sharing its harvest with others.
Above all, Rodrigo treasured his family. His five granddaughters—Syan, Mila, Audrey, Kalla, and Quinn—held a very special place in his heart. His face would light up whenever they were near. No matter how tired he was, he never hesitated to spend time with them, care for them, or simply make them smile. They were deeply loved by their beloved Lolo, and the memories they shared with him will remain a lasting blessing.
Rodrigo was also a devoted father to his two children, Veronica (Tim Kentner) and Francisco (Lundy Barrey). He found joy in serving his family in countless ways. Whether cooking a favorite meal, helping maintain their homes, caring for his grandchildren, or faithfully praying for each member of the family, he was always ready to lend a helping hand. Acts of service were his love language, and he gave of himself freely and wholeheartedly.
Last, but not least, the love of his life is his wife Mercelita Barrey. Love comes in so many forms. They may not show a lot of affection, but the subtle things he would do speak volumes. He is not a morning person but wakes up early every morning. They attend the 6:45am Mass, and work as a team to have everything prepared. After Mass, they would also do the closing duties. They were inseparable. Two hearts beat as one, all for the glory of God. To the very end, til death do us part, in serving God, their love truly became one.
Rodrigo’s life was a beautiful testament to humility, generosity, faith, and unconditional love. Though our hearts grieve his passing, we rejoice in knowing that he has been welcomed into the loving embrace of our Heavenly Father. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched, the family he cherished, and the faith he so faithfully lived each day.
