Roger Myrlin Burkholder

February 19, 1945April 29, 2013

Roger Myrlin Burkholder, 68, passed away after suffering a heart attack on the 29th of April 2013 in Houston, Texas. He was born on the 19th of February 1945 in Duncan, Oklahoma, the son of Myrlin and Mary (King) Burkholder. He spent his childhood in Sulphur, Louisiana and attended Sulphur High School, graduating in 1963.

Roger attended McNeese State College, graduating with a Bachelors of Science Degree in 1969. He served in the US Army Judge Advocate General’s Corp as a Legal Specialist from 1969 through 1971 and received an Army Commendation Medal for Excellence.

He joined the IRS in 1972 as a Tax Auditor and became the Chief Auditor of Appeals Division. In 1980, Roger served as Tax Manager for an international CPA Firm, and became a CPA in Texas starting in 1985. He was Chief Financial Officer of Hall-Houston Oil Company before starting his personal CPA practice in 2002. Roger finished his career providing tax and accounting services to over seven hundred clients. He also worked with his longtime friend, Nancy Shockey, as President and Co-founder of La Esperanza Oil & Gas. Roger was also Co-founder of La Esperanza Christian Foundation, which privately supports over one hundred churches and charitable organizations.

Roger was married for 10 years to Sherri (Burkholder) Nelius. He is survived by their son, Brian Burkholder; and daughter, Jeana Harding. He has six grandchildren, Haylie Harding, Meredith Burkholder, Brooke Harding, Wyatt Burkholder, Katie Harding, and Jesse Burkholder. Roger is also survived by his brothers, Leslie Burkholder and Arnold Burkholder.

Roger Burkholder greatly enjoyed fishing, golf, and visiting with friends. He was a natural storyteller, loved life and laughter, and was unfailingly generous with his love, time, effort, and money. “Daddy B” was justly proud of his family and accomplishments, and will be missed as father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock in the afternoon until eight o’clock in the evening on Friday, the 3rd of May, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

The funeral service is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Saturday, the 4th of May, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, where Tom Brandon, Jr. is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.

In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests, with gratitude, that contributions in Roger’s memory be directed to Joel Osteen Ministries, P. O. Box 4600, Houston, TX, 77210; Feed the Children, 4701 Blalock Rd., Houston, TX , 77041; or to the charity of one’s choice.

Rogers death came as a shock to me today. I was going to drop him a hello and found this page instead. So now I say farewell. I have known Roger since 1971. May our heavenly Father give comfort to all his family and friends. He gave me a priceless long ago. I will always remember Roger.

Roger started out as my CPA but through his warmth and sincerity, he became a friend, especially when he asked if I would help him with obtaining dental treatment for a young girl who worked at James Coney Island. He wanted to help her because he knew she was self-conscious of her teeth and had no financial means for dental treatment. When he reached out to me, I truly saw a man with a great heart and who had a desire to help those in need!!
I extend my condolences to his family-he spoke often and was very proud of his children and grandchildren!!
Roger will be greatly missed!

With deepest sympathy,
Margo Melchor

I knew Roger as my CPA for the last 7 years, although I thought of him more as a friend than as my CPA. Roger provided outstanding services to my father before his passing and to 4 of my siblings as well. He was a wonderful, generous, brilliant man. He will be sorely missed.
