Roger Myrlin Burkholder, 68, passed away after suffering a heart attack on the 29th of April 2013 in Houston, Texas. He was born on the 19th of February 1945 in Duncan, Oklahoma, the son of Myrlin and Mary (King) Burkholder. He spent his childhood in Sulphur, Louisiana and attended Sulphur High School, graduating in 1963.
Roger attended McNeese State College, graduating with a Bachelors of Science Degree in 1969. He served in the US Army Judge Advocate General’s Corp as a Legal Specialist from 1969 through 1971 and received an Army Commendation Medal for Excellence.
He joined the IRS in 1972 as a Tax Auditor and became the Chief Auditor of Appeals Division. In 1980, Roger served as Tax Manager for an international CPA Firm, and became a CPA in Texas starting in 1985. He was Chief Financial Officer of Hall-Houston Oil Company before starting his personal CPA practice in 2002. Roger finished his career providing tax and accounting services to over seven hundred clients. He also worked with his longtime friend, Nancy Shockey, as President and Co-founder of La Esperanza Oil & Gas. Roger was also Co-founder of La Esperanza Christian Foundation, which privately supports over one hundred churches and charitable organizations.
Roger was married for 10 years to Sherri (Burkholder) Nelius. He is survived by their son, Brian Burkholder; and daughter, Jeana Harding. He has six grandchildren, Haylie Harding, Meredith Burkholder, Brooke Harding, Wyatt Burkholder, Katie Harding, and Jesse Burkholder. Roger is also survived by his brothers, Leslie Burkholder and Arnold Burkholder.
Roger Burkholder greatly enjoyed fishing, golf, and visiting with friends. He was a natural storyteller, loved life and laughter, and was unfailingly generous with his love, time, effort, and money. “Daddy B” was justly proud of his family and accomplishments, and will be missed as father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock in the afternoon until eight o’clock in the evening on Friday, the 3rd of May, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The funeral service is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Saturday, the 4th of May, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, where Tom Brandon, Jr. is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.
