

She was born in Hoopeston, Illinois to Nellie and Leonard Singleton. She graduated from Purdue University in 1949 where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Ruth taught home economics in Chicago several years after graduation. She married Doyle Eugene “Gene” Johnson in 1952 and they moved to Houston in 1955.
Ruth and Gene were charter members of Westbury United Methodist Church, Houston, where they raised their family and were involved in many aspects of the church. Ruth was a member of the Alexander Love Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She moved to Sugar Land in 1992 and joined Christ United Methodist Church where she served as a Stephen Minister and was a member of the choir.
She was preceded in death by her husband and daughters, Celinda Johnson Booher and Mary Beth Johnson Brown. Ruth is survived by daughters, Rhonda Johnson Riser (Boerne, Tx) and Karen Johnson Watkins (Eddy, TX), eight grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Christ United Methodist Church,3300 Austin Parkway, Sugar Land, TX 77479 on Tuesday, November 8 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to East Fort Bend Human Needs in Stafford, Texas.
