September 5, 1925-July 16, 2018
Ruth Allyn Whitlock Sublett died peacefully in the early hours of July 16, 2018, at age 92.
Ruth was born and raised in Beaumont, Texas, the third child of Charles Scott and Carrye Julia (Mooneyham) Whitlock. She made friends at Ogden Elementary, David Crocket Junior High, and Beaumont High that she treasured and remained close to all of her life.
On February 3, 1946, Ruth married her high school sweetheart, Charles Carson “Pete” Sublett, Jr. They moved to Houston in 1948. Their household filled out to seven children: Shelley, Chuk, Susie, Judy, Casey, Mike, and Kit. Their home on North Wilcrest was a lively one, as was the family’s beloved beach house on Bolivar, and later their ranch in Montgomery County. She cherished her role as a full-time homemaker and mother and her family were all blessed by it.
She was a loyal and active member of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church for 56 years, joining in 1962. At the age of 55, she re-entered the work force and had a 26-year career in the oil country tubular goods industry, most notably with Triad Pipe and Steel.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents and Pete as well as her older sister Louise Scott Whitlock Welsh and Charles Scott Whitlock, Jr. She loved her older siblings, even though they teased her mercilessly growing up.
Ruth was also preceded in death by her infant son Gary Carson Sublett, who died shortly after his birth in 1951, and her adult children Mike, Susie, and Chuk. Daughter-in-law Claire Sublett and son-in-law Larry Wild also preceded her in death.
She is survived by Shelley and Gene Jorgensen, daughter-in-law Mary Sublett, Judy Wild, Casey Sublett, and Kit Sublett. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Carrye Jorgensen Krouse (Kyle), Emily Jorgensen Galatzan (Josh), Tyler Jorgensen (Valerie), Jeff Jorgensen (Coble), Kyle Martin (Renée), Michele Martin Rich (Matt), Chandler Wild, Alexis Dietze, Tim Sublett, Christin Dietze (Courtney), Annie Wild Bogart (Rob), Carson Sublett, and Lizzie Wild. Ruth adored and is also survived by her fifteen great-grandchildren.
The priorities of her life were her family and her faith in Christ. Ruth was a beloved mother, grandmother, prayer warrior, friend, and mentor to many. She participated in and led countless Bible studies. She was a fantastic cook (even though she did not particularly enjoy cooking) and loved to entertain. She had a great knack for interior design. She always conducted herself with grace. Her sense of humor was constant and infectious. Whether it was an Agatha Christie novel or, in later years, true crime shows on TV, Ruth had a lifelong love for a good mystery. All who knew her will miss her joy, quick wit, wisdom, and the twinkle in her eye.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 7, at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, 12955 Memorial Drive, Houston. A visitation with the family will also be held at the church from 5:00 to 7:00 on Thursday evening, September 6.
The family requests that contributions in memory of Ruth be made to Memorial Drive United Methodist Church (designate “Adult Bible Study” in the memo) or Young Life, P. O. Box 691106, Houston, TX 77269.
