Marto spent her formative years in Freetown where she commenced her primary education at the Amaria Primary School. She later attended St. Joseph’s Convent Secondary School in Makeni. Marto; as she was commonly called by those who grew up with her, came to the US in 1974. She moved to Houston in the early 80s and attended the University of Houston where she obtained an Undergraduate Degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management. She interned at the Hilton Hotel. Her entrepreneurial instinct inspired her to start her own import and export business. She was the first person in Houston to import and sell African clothes, foods and artifacts. Fashion design was her passion. Marto was a devout believing Christian and a great dedicated evangelist for Jesus. She had strong faith and was a virtuous woman. Until her death, she was a member of Church of the Nations and was also an active member of The Wailing Women. Marto was a nurturer to all she met. TRIBUTE TO MY SISTER SALIMATU DOUMBOUYA My twin sister, as she always calls me, we both love each other, grew up as best friends, and she talks about me to most of her friends. We spent quality time over the phone, and when we meet we could hardly sleep. We are so special to each other, despite the fact that we tease and laugh at each other when reminding ourselves about the past. When we were in high school, we spent our vacation time together, dressed alike, and we were mistaken for twins. We both had a passion for sewing and whenever I visited her in Houston, she was extremely happy because both of us will stay up till 3am sewing and reminiscing on the past. Towards the end of her illness, she assured me she was not going to die because she had to complete the task God had blessed her to do. The task was to go to Sierra Leone to build a small house to help the poor children. I know that my sister is in the hands of the Lord. She was a woman of high faith and was very kind. She believed so much in God her creator. The family will miss her so much, especially me because I have no friend that I will spend hours talking to. She will always be in my prayers until we meet again. Your twin, Isatu Sangari
