Salvador Carpio Galera

Salvador Carpio Galera. “Buddy”, 82, entered eternal rest on January 12, 2019 in Houston, Texas. He was born in Currimao, Ilocos Norte, Philippines on February 29, 1936 to parents Pedro Galera and Romana Carpio.

Some of Salvador’s fondest childhood memories were playing outside the church with friends. His early dreams and ambitions were to attend college and one day get married and bring his wife and children to the United States of America. Salvador was passionate about higher education. He earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering and went on to be a Professor at Manuel L. Quezon University, College of Engineering and Architecture in the Philippines. At the University, he was the Assistant to the Dean/Provost and was involved in the creation of curriculum and program for the college of Engineering. In the United States, he worked for the Rail Car Industry over 40 years in various positions from inspector, supervisor, project manager and quality assurance for Richmond Tank Car, Union Tank Car, and TMC Engineering Services. He treasured the love of teaching and throughout his career he continued the pursuit of life learnings impacting the people he worked with throughout his career. All through his life, his love of learning translated to a life well-lived. He enjoyed the love of music, gardening, traveling, ballroom dancing, singing his Sinatra songs, playing mahjong, spending time with family and going out with the Sampaguita group. He looked forward to spending time with his family, going to the movies and eating out after church. A simple life but he cherished every moment of it. His philanthropy involved supporting the Filipino Scholarship program which provided college scholarships to Filipino students in the Houston area. In 1994, he was the President of the Ilocano Club of Metro Houston.

Salvador had many accomplishments in his life and to name a few; he made sure his children had better opportunities and a blessed life in the United States, teaching at Manuel L. Quezon University and reaching his goal of establishing a life for his family in the United States. As he reflected on his life, family and career. he was proud and said, “I saw my kids finish school, educated and accomplished in their own right in the United States.” He loved his grandchildren and wished that he had more time with them.

He kept his passion for higher education and asked all his grandchildren to “study hard” He left a legacy of faith, love, strength, dignity and family and always staying humble.

Salvador is preceded in death by the love of his life and first wife, Mila Lorenzo Galera; parents, Pedro Galera and Romana (Carpio) Galera; and all of his siblings, Irene Galera, Amparo Galera, Johnny Galera, Luling Ramos, Theodora (Pinay) Galera, Clemente Aguliana, Cesar Galera, Goring Padolina, and Theresa Galera

Left to cherish his loving memory, wife; Lota Vergara Galera; children, Mylene Galera Wursta and husband Ted, Darwin Galera and wife Gina, Aldrin Galera and wife Denae, and Homer Galera and wife Lisa; grandchildren, Ariel, Isabel, Tristan, Olivia, Kendall, Alycia, Coby, Kris, Tristyn, Levi; and a host of extended family and beloved life-long friends Sampaguita Group.

A visitation for Salvador will be held Thursday, January 17, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary starting at 7:00 p.m. at Brookside Funeral Home, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, TX 77039. A funeral service will be on Friday, January 18, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Brookside Funeral Home, Grand Chapel with a committal service and burial to follow immediately at Brookside Memorial Park, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, TX 77039.
