Well, if you’re reading this, I guess I’ve gone on to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
My name is Sam Leon Green. I was born on April 18, 1944, in Palestine, Texas, to my parents, the late Three-In-One Green and the late Velma G. Perro. I was raised in Palestine before making Houston, Texas, my home. I graduated from Wheatley High School and spent more than 60 years as a truck driver. That’s a long time behind the wheel, but I was proud of the work I did. I believed in working hard, doing things the right way, and taking care of my family.
I accepted Christ at an early age and was connected with New Bethel Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. J.W. Grace. In my later years, I continued my faith journey under the leadership of my current pastor, Rev. Caleb B. Anderson. My faith was an important part of my life, and my favorite Scripture was the 23rd Psalm. I found comfort and strength in its words throughout my life. And now that my work here is finished, I know that God has another place prepared for me.
But let me tell you something about me—I loved music. Music was in my heart. As “Ace,” the drummer, I had the opportunity to play alongside some well-known artists in the R&B and Country music worlds. And don’t forget—I was competitive!
I loved fishing, golf, shooting pool, and especially sitting around that domino table. And if you ever played dominoes with me, you already know I wasn’t there just to participate. I was there to win! That’s why some of you knew me as “Queezeye, the Man from Black Rock!”
I lived life my way. I loved to laugh. I loved to dance. I loved telling stories. And I enjoyed being around people. I may have talked a little trash every now and then, but that’s just part of who I was. You knew what you were getting when Sam walked through the door.
I was preceded in death by my parents and my wife, Wanda Green.
To my children, Eric V. Green (Tyronna), Sherri L. Green, Angela R. Dolphus (Gerald), and Jermaine L. Green—I want you to know that I loved you and you were a part of my heart and my greatest legacy.
To my grandchildren, Shaketha Green, Dominique Green, Rachel Ballard (Joshua), Christopher Dolphus, Jaylin Green, and Tiera Eglin—keep making papa proud.
And to my great-grandchildren, Brandon Flora (Tiera) and Ava Ballard (Rachel)—always remember that your papa loved you.
To my brothers, Three-In-One Jr. and Eric (Sherri), and my sisters, Stephanie (Andre), Patricia, May Pearl, Beverly, Pinky, Rena, Marie, and Rose (late), thank you, along with my extended family and friends, for being a part of my life. I love and appreciate you all.
When you think of me, don’t just think about the day I left. Think about the good times. Remember my music. Remember my laugh. Remember me dancing. Remember the stories. Remember the domino games. And most of all, remember the love. So don’t cry forever for me. Celebrate me.
Put on some music. Tell a funny story about me. Play a game of dominoes. And when somebody starts talking like they’re the best player at the table, just remind them: “Queezeye, the Man from Black Rock, said he was better!”
Love Always, Sam Leon Green
