Samuel Hei-Yu Wong, a man of deep curiosity about the subjects he loved, a sharp wit, and a truly global spirit, passed away in Houston on February 27, 2026, at the age of 78. While he was a distinguished chemical engineer by trade, those who knew him best will remember him as a man who savored the world in every sense: through history, economic trends, and most certainly its food.
Sam’s life was an epic narrative in its own right. Born in Shanghai to Ting Sing and Yan Nee Wong, he grew up amidst the energy of Hong Kong before heading to London for school. His thirst for knowledge eventually led him to the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees before earning his PhD in Chemical Engineering. It was also in Chicago where he began his greatest adventure of all: 53 years of marriage to his beloved wife, Clare.
Sam’s career with Argonne National Laboratory, Quantum Chemicals, and Chevron Phillips took him across the globe, including a memorable long-term chapter in Saudi Arabia. He wasn't just a traveler for work; Sam was a true explorer. He moved through the world with a deep appreciation for culture and a keen interest in the global economy that connects us all. Friends and family knew that any conversation with Sam might range from world history to financial markets, always delivered with curiosity, insight, and a touch of humor.
Above all, Sam cherished family. He took immense pride in his children and grandchildren and remained deeply devoted to his family in Hong Kong. Among his professional achievements, he was most proud to receive the Chevron Phillips Medallion Award and to be recognized by the University of Illinois at Chicago as an Outstanding Alumnus.
Sam’s legacy lives on through his wife, Clare; his son Alan and his wife Sarah, along with his cherished grandchildren, Edgar and Ada; and his daughter Emily and her husband Aaron. He remains a beloved figure to his extended family across the United States, Japan, and Hong Kong.
In keeping with Sam’s wishes, a private family ceremony will be held, with interment to follow at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you keep him in your thoughts as you remember a life that was truly well-traveled and well-lived.
