Sara Nan Snoddy Peterson, age 85, of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, the 6th of March 2012. Sara Nan was born in Houston, on the 10th of September 1926, to Joe Elizabeth Smith Snoddy and James Emmett Snoddy. She attended Lamar High School and graduated from The Rice Institute in 1946, with a degree in Romance Languages. While at Rice, she was a member of the Elizabeth Baldwin Literary Society.
Sara Nan married Antone Lewis "Tony" Peterson, Jr. on the 11th of June 1947, at Central Presbyterian Church in Houston, thus beginning a loving and devoted partnership that lasted 64 years. Always generous with her time and talents, Sara Nan was an active member of St. Philip Presbyterian Church and was involved in many different facets of St. Philip's ministry. She was a member of the Monday Morning Saints Circle, THE Bridge Club (an institution of more than sixty years), and the Revelers Dance Club. She was an honorary member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. Sara Nan volunteered for many years as a tutor at Pilgrim Elementary School. She took great pride in the academic strides that many Pilgrim students, including many immigrants to our country, made during her years there. She was the consummate homemaker, an accomplished cook, and an enthusiastic needle worker, craftswoman, and gardener.
Sara Nan was a gracious and generous hostess. She delighted in entertaining family and friends in her home; at "Sagama", the family lake house in Bull Shoals, Arkansas; and at the family's South Texas "Guajillo Ranch" on the Nueces River. She loved dove and quail hunting, "patrolling" the roads and senderos of the Ranch with her beloved grandchildren, and sharing stories around the fire pit or on the deck while gazing at the stars. She also enjoyed over fifty years of fun and friends that she and Tony made at Lakeside Country Club.
Sara Nan and Tony shared a near life-long relationship with the "Sindicate," a group of close high school friends and spouses who traveled together, raised their families together, and enjoyed each other's company as extended family. She loved the members of the Sindicate and cherished their "progressive dinners;" pilgrimages to "Guajillo Ranch" and to "Apple Gulch" in Hunt, Texas; golf outings and hunting trips.
Sara Nan is survived by her husband, Tony Peterson; sons, Antone Lewis Peterson III and wife, Susan, and Homer Rufus Peterson II and wife, Nancy; grandchildren, Sara Kristen Peterson Johnson and husband, Corey, Kara Elisabeth Peterson, Antone Leslie Peterson, and Clifton Morgan "Pete" Peterson; and great-grandsons, Craig David and Cameron Patrick Johnson. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Mary Weisman Peterson and Esther Sue "Suzie" Robertson Snoddy; niece and nephews, George Alfred "Al" Peterson, Jr., Lawrence Andrew "Larry" Peterson and wife, Mary, Julie Peterson Carr and husband, Hal, James Emmett "Jim" Snoddy III and wife, Andrea, and Walter Edward Snoddy and wife, Susie. She was preceded in death by her parents, Liz and Bud Snoddy, her brother, James Emmett "Jimmy" Snoddy, Jr. and her brother-in-law, George Alfred Peterson.
Throughout her life, Sara Nan cared for, comforted, and supported family and friends. She was a devoted spouse, loving mother, doting grandmother, and world-class mother-in-law. We have been blessed by her grace and charm, and will be eternally grateful for her presence and influence in our lives.
The family extends sincere thanks to the caregivers at the Plaza at the Buckingham, Professional Caretakers, and Odyssey Hospice for their compassionate care and assistance in Sara Nan's last months.
A memorial service is to be conducted at half-past one o'clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 16th of March, at St. Philip Presbyterian Church, 4807 San Felipe Road in Houston, where the Rev. Steven Spidell is to officiate.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Philip Presbyterian Church, 4807 San Felipe Rd., Houston, TX 77056; or to the charity of one's choice.
