November 28, 1926-September 17, 2017
Sara Jane Fulbright Price passed from this world into the arms of her Lord and Savior, in the early morning hours of September 17, 2017, while under hospice care at home with family, in Houston, Texas. She was ninety years old.
Sara was born on November 28, 1926, to Rev. Jackson Owen Fulbright and Mary Evans Burris Fulbright, in Gastonia, North Carolina. She was the fourth of their six children. She attended public schools in Habersham and Franklin Counties, Georgia, and graduated from Franklin County High School in Carnesville, Georgia. She attended Bessie Tift College, Baptist women’s college, in Forsyth, Georgia, where she obtained a her certification in business office administration.
Shortly thereafter, Sara went to work with the R.G. LeTourneau Company at its new manufacturing plant in Toccoa, Georgia. There, she met her future husband, while attending chapel services at the plant. They were married by her father, on April 6, 1946, at the Fulbright family home. Shortly thereafter, at the urging of Jim’s plant manager, Jim accepted an offer extended by LeTourneau to move to Texas to study at the newly-founded LeTourneau Technical Institute, in Longview, Texas. Thereafter, they moved to Houston, where Jim found employment with the Independent Exploration Company, one of the pioneering companies in the field of oil exploration. For this young, small-town couple, it was the beginning of the adventure-of-a-lifetime. For a little more than a decade, Sara & Jim moved all over the Midwest, Texas & Louisiana, with a cadre of fellow “doodlebuggers,” looking for oil. In April 1955, they had their first son, Jim, Jr., in Casper, Wyoming, during the middle of a blizzard. Seventeen months later, Jeff made his entry into the world, in balmy Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
In 1960, the family settled down in Houston, so that the boys could attend school. Sara was active in the PTA, fundraising efforts for school programs, and pee-wee and little league sports. At different times, she worked in the accounting offices of the Spring Branch Independent School District, Daniel Industries, and Red Wing Shoes.
Being a “preacher’s kid,” she made sure that the family was at church, just about every time the doors were open. After joining First Baptist Church of Spring Branch, the family banded with 14 other families to start FBCSB’s new mission church, Spring Woods Baptist Church in 1969. She was active in all of its efforts from its beginning. She was also active in the Women’s Auxiliary of the Houston Geophysical Society, played bridge with friends, enjoyed painting and cooking, loved to travel with fellow widows and above, all, loved her family.
The greatest tragedy of her life came in February, 1984, when Jim, Sr., passed away. But in the midst of her sadness, she was blessed with the births of her grandchildren, Jacob and Jodi. She devoted herself to caring for them, as well as her “adopted” grandchildren, Matthew and Ashley Reibenstein.
Sara is predeceased by her parents, Rev. J.O. & Mary Fulbright, her husband, James A. Price (Sr.), her parents-in-law, Jesse Nelson & Leila B. Price, her brothers, Owen Daniel Fulbright and Joseph Jackson Fulbright, and her sisters, Addie Louise Holcomb, and Mary Elizabeth Fulbright.
Sara is survived by her children, Jim Price, Jr. and Jeff & Karon Price (Houston and Cypress); her sister, Gail Porter (Seguin TX); her grandchildren Jacob & Marianna Price and daughter Klara (Dallas) and Jodi Price (Dallas); her nieces and nephews Anne & Rick Belser (Charleston SC), Debbie Brown (Seguin TX), Eric & Kelly Brown (Denver CO), Lou & David Evans (Clarkesville GA), Jack & Joan Fulbright (Clarkesville GA), Kim Fulbright (Clarkesville GA), Paul & Jean Holcomb (Columbia SC), Kay & Jonny Workman (Clarkesville GA); and numerous great-nephews and –nieces.
The family wishes to thank the nursing staff and caregivers of S. Gerber & Associates, Inc. and Hospice Plus for their ministry to Sara during her last days.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Missions Ministry of Tallowood Baptist Church.
