Sarah Square was born to Jim & Ethel Square on July 21, 1930 in Cleveland, TX. Sarah united with the love of her life, Robert Lee Phillips and remained a devoted wife until his death. Their loving home raised children, grandchildren, and children of their beloved Bordersville, respectfully.
Sarah accepted Christ as her personal Lord and Savior and served as a faithful member and usher at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church in Bordersville, TX.
She was employed by Aldine Independent School District for many years before retiring to pursue her true labor of love—serving as a dutiful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
It is affectionately and humorously known that Sarah was the disciplinarian in the home—quick to send you out to fetch a switch for your own whipping. If Robert Lee intervened, he might have caught a couple of slashes from the switch himself.
Mama Sarah breathed life into everything she touched, as was evident in her garden of fresh vegetables, fruit trees, flowers, and many animals. The love and compassion she exemplified for her family remains the standard for the Phillips legacy. As a pillar of the Bordersville community, she touched the hearts and lives of many.
Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Phillips; parents, Jim and Ethel Square; brothers, Eugene Square, Jimmy Square, Percy “Whistle” Simkins, and Leroy Square; sisters, Martha “Blue Baby” Square, and Betty McGrew; children, Katherine Dart, Earnest “Skeeter” Rushing, and Ola George; grandson, Claude Derrick Phillips; and a special niece, Jeanette Ratcliff.
She is survived by her sister, Mattie Square Clay; children, Peggy Wiley (Claude), Alvin Phillips (Gladys), Vernon Phillips (Patricia), Robert Earl Phillips (Gloria), Beverly Phillips, Kenneth Crews, and British LaRue (Kyle); sister-in-law, Betty Jones; as well as a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, and friends.
