January 24, 1945 – October 16, 2026
Saramma Thomas, affectionately known as Shanthamma, was born on January 24, 1945, in Kothamangalam, Kerala, India, to the late Reverend P.V. Thomas (Pandenkallunkal), Vicar of the C.S.I. Church in Thidanadu, and Rebekah Samuel (Kaippanickal). She was the eldest of four siblings, including the late P.T. Thomas (Babu), the late Molly Thomas, and the late Dr. Rebecca Thomas (Betty).
Saramma pursued her nursing education at Mysore Mission Hospital and began her career at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi. In 1972, she moved to the United States, working as a registered nurse in Denton, Texas, before settling in Houston. She devoted 32 years to caring for others in the Jones Pavilion Surgical Unit at Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and dedicated service.
In 1975, Saramma returned to India to marry Thomas P. Thomas of Puthupally, lovingly known as Joy, son of P.C. Thomas Pareparambil and Annamma Thomas. Together, they began their married life in Houston, raising their children, Tessie and Stanley, first in Hiram Clarke, then in Alief in 1982, before settling in Sugar Land in 2002.
Saramma found joy in cooking, gardening, and shopping for those she loved. She and Joy treasured family road trips throughout the United States and India, exploring historic monuments and beautiful landscapes. Her Christian faith was an important part of her life, and she was a beloved member of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church and St. Thomas CSI Church of Greater Houston.
Above all, Saramma cherished her family, especially her grandchildren, Sophia and Thomas Frontal. Being their Grandma was one of her greatest joys. She devoted herself to showering them with love, care, and encouragement from the time they were born through their school years. The love she gave them will remain a treasured part of her enduring legacy.
Saramma went home to be with the Lord on the evening of Friday, October 16, 2026. She is survived by her beloved husband of 51 years, Joy; her daughter, Tessie Frontal; her grandchildren, Sophia and Thomas Frontal; her son, Stanley Thomas; and her daughter-in-law, Jocelyn Thomas.
Saramma will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. We find comfort in our faith, trusting that she is now with Jesus, where there is no more pain, sorrow, or suffering. We give thanks for the beautiful life she lived, the love she shared, and the example she leaves for us to follow. Though she is no longer with us, her faith, kindness, and love will live on in the hearts of all whose lives she touched.
