Born to Rufus Rockett and Sallie Harrison on June 27, 1944 in Sallis Mississippi, Saul soon called Houston home-moving to the City at age 5. Saul graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1963.
Saul’s work ethic led to a 32 year tenure as a machinist for MacMillan Bloedell, one of North America’s largest manufacturers.
Faith and family were the foundation of Saul’s life. He was a dedicated member of Preeminence Christian Fellowship (PCF) under the leadership of Pastor Edson Weithers for close to two decades serving as a Deacon and putting his passion for music on display singing with the men of PCF about the goodness of God.
One of his most endearing qualities, his love for family, was no more evident than in his consistent presence at family gatherings. From birthdays to Thanksgiving to Christmas parties, you could always count on him to bring his spirit of fun, a genuine smile and a great appreciation for the menu. A life long sports enthusiast, Saul was lovingly called “Coach” by fans in the stands at Booker T. Washington football games, respected for his knowledge of the game as well as his loyalty to the school. Saul was also an avid fan of football at the collegiate and professional levels. The sports of boxing and basketball were not far behind with him rooting on the Houston Rockets. After retirement, he also enjoyed traveling across the country; vacationing in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Las Vegas and Philadelphia.
Saul is survived by his wife Shirley; his children, Kent Harris, Priscilla Johnson (Kevin), Sauleen Kirby (Marc); Shawnell Holman-Jordan (Randall) and Christopher Holman (Helen); his grandchildren Kevin “Donta” (Madelyn), Pierre, Jaleska, Jasmine, Jessica, Christian Grace, and Christopher II (CJ); great grandchildren, Sariah and Saniyya; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. We should also note that he was especially close to his extended family, the Taylors, and Doris Comeaux.
