Sherry lived a wonderful life centered around family, friends, and a lifelong career as an educator. She was born in the post-depression era, and although her family didn’t have all that much growing up, that never prevented her from being generous in every way possible throughout her life.
Sherry was always motivated and accomplished, earning two Masters degrees in education, her counselor’s certificate, and her principal’s certificate. She joked that she knew she never intended to go the principal route, but once she started, “she just couldn’t bring herself to leave something that she started unfinished.” This determination served her well in her career; she was a school counselor that nurtured and mentored children for over 20 years.
Sherry met the love of her life, Coye Dale Wilcox, in 1971 while living in Houston, TX. Excited to start their lives together, the two were married in Houston on January, 15th 1972. In Sherry’s words, their 51 years of marriage flew by as they had “what everyone wants and deserves but few seldom get…unconditional love.” From this beautiful marriage, came two amazing sons and 5 beautiful grandchildren.
Sherry had a love of many things in life. She loved her dogs, her horses, the Frio River, hitting the Casinos, and offering her opinion whether you asked for it or not! But Sherry’s greatest love, hands down, was raising her children and grandchildren. She took pride in cooking and having a tidy home for her family, and the Wilcox home was always welcoming to family and neighborhood friends. She was a devoted mom who would do anything for her family, and when the grandchildren arrived, she loved them as if they were her own. Her new title “Mimi” fit her well and she took so much pride in her new role. Mimi even kept her twin grandsons for four years while their parents were at work.
As we start this new season in our lives, we will laugh, cry, and remember all the joys and sorrows that we had as a family. She was the glue that held her family together. She made the Wilcox house a home for 50 years. We will miss her spunk, her smile, her strong will, and her giving heart. She will live forever in our hearts.
Sherry passed away peacefully on Monday, October 9, 2023 at her home in Magnolia, TX.
