She was born and lived the first half of her life in New Orleans, Louisiana, a city that never left her heart. A child of the depression, she was the only one in her family to graduate from high school, finishing first in her class. She began her relatively short professional life working for the U.S. Secret Service. After marrying her soldier sweetheart, Lt. Daniel J. Cox, in September, 1944, she devoted the rest of her life to supporting and caring for her husband and four children. She moved to Houston in 1969, accompanying her husband in his career as a Shell Oil Company executive. There they quickly immersed themselves in community and church activities and would continue such until Dan passed away in January, 2001. Shirley laughed often, danced at every opportunity and made a friend of everyone she met. In her later years, Shirley was a resident of Colonial Oaks Memory Care facility, where her friendly and caring nature quickly endeared her to residents and staff alike.
She is survived by her children and their spouses: Colonel Daniel J. Cox, Jr. and wife Linda, of Fairfax Station, VA; Brian M. Cox and wife Edna, of League City, TX; Laura Cox Garrett and husband Lieutenant Colonel Brad Garrett of Copperas Cove, TX; and Nancy Cox Moody and husband Wright of Houston, TX; and by eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to acknowledge the loving care provided by the staff of Colonial Oaks Westchase for the past nine years. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution in Shirley's name to Interfaith Care Partners, Inc. 701 N. Post Oak Rd #330, Houston, TX 77024. http://www.interfaithcarepartners.org
A memorial service and burial will take place on April 30th, 12:30 pm at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Fwy, Houston, TX 77079.
