She was born on March 31, 1935, in San Jose, Costa Rica, to Gregorio Castro Cruz and Eduardo Leduc. Sidonia was preceded in death by her cherished husband of 59 years, John Clayton Miller, and her parents.
Sidonia’s life was a beautiful adventure that began in Costa Rica and led her to the United States. On a beautiful rainy night aboard steamboat dinner cruise in New Orleans in February of 1965, she met the love of her life, John. Their whirlwind romance culminated in marriage on July 3, 1965, at Mid Cities Baptist Church. For love, Sidonia became a U.S. citizen, a point of pride that was later joyfully complemented by her reinstated Costa Rican dual citizenship in 1995. She was a strong woman of faith and gave all her glory to God.
The couple settled in Houston’s Alief community for John’s career at Texas Instruments. Sidonia devoted herself to building a beautiful family. She was quick to have their first child Jacquline, then their second child Joyce. With her husband’s family all having baby girls (11 in total) she decided to have one more child in hopes of having a boy to complete the family. Then on June 15the 1971 Sidonia gave her biggest surprise to her Wisconsin family, a baby boy, John Jr. In tribute to her husband, John Clayton Miller (JCM), she lovingly gave all three of their children the same initials: Jacqueline Cidonia, Joyce Caroline, and John Clayton Miller, Jr.
Sidonia was a woman of many passions. She proudly shared her Costa Rican heritage, teaching Spanish at Wilcrest Baptist Church and giving cultural presentations at Chambers Elementary. She had a successful career, forming lasting friendships at companies like Bechtel, Chubb & Son, and Brown & Root. Her love for sports was fierce, spanning from Costa Rica’s National Fútbol team to her beloved Houston Astros and the “Luv Ya Blue” Oilers. An intrepid world traveller, she journeyed across six continents, savouring new cultures, beaches, and her morning coffee with a splash of Baileys.
Above all, Sidonia was her family’s biggest cheerleader. She was a constant, vibrant presence at her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, famously known as the one with the loudest noisemakers in the stands. Her love and energetic spirit created a legacy of joy and togetherness.
She is lovingly remembered by her three children, Jacqueline Miller of Frisco, TX; Joyce Miller of Katy, TX; and John Miller, Jr. and his wife Mary of Katy, TX; her six grandchildren, Cormac "CJ" John Creaven (Madison); great-grandson, Carter John Creaven, Caroline Jacqueline Creaven, Colton James Creaven, Alexis Nicole Miller (Will), John Clayton Miller III, and Blake Thomas Miller; and her two brothers, Rubèn Darío Segreda Solera and Josè Jocksan Moraga Castro of San Jose, Costa Rica.
Blessed are the sweet memories we have of Sidonia Miller and her legacy will continue to live on in our hearts. Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers for Sidonia and the Miller Family!
A celebration of Sidonia’s remarkable life will be held at American Heritage Funeral Home August 29th at 12pm.
