1947-2017
Joseph peacefully entered eternal life on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at the young age of 70, after a brief valiant struggle with brain cancer. He is preceded in death by his parents, Rosemary “Rose” Piazza & Silton J. Ortego Sr. and sister, Rosemary “Rosie” Erickson. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Betty, their four children - Steven Voebel, Sinda Tetreault (Greg), Nicole Bullard (Daniel), and Pamela Ortego, two cats - Jack and Hoppy, seven grandchildren - Chloe, Gabrielle, Ty, Megan, Elise, Zackary and Isabella Rose, and four sisters - Mary Ann Prestenback, Patricia Ortego, Antoinette LeBlanc, and Cynthia Ducote (David).
Joseph worked as an IT manager, for 15 years, with Houston Independent School District before retiring in 2011. He found retirement extremely satisfying often reminding us (who were not) how wonderful it was not having to wake up early the next morning for work. Joe had an enthusiasm for life. He became an avid cyclist completing five MS150 riding fundraisers to benefit Multiple Sclerosis research and found a sense of pride in walking 25 miles per week. He loved being involved in the Catholic Church, especially with the youth. He and Betty were active participants in Prison Ministry and eventually he became a Catholic chaplain. Joe believed it was never too late to know God. He loved to eat, he loved his family, and he loved eating out with his family. He was a loyal Saints fan, even after moving to Houston, an Astros fanatic from the very beginning, and would never miss an episode of The Walking Dead. Joseph’s witty personality and infectious laugh left countless lasting impressions. His selflessness and honorable spirit was evident in everything he did.
