Born in Cuba, Silvia grew up in Havana during a vibrant and historic era. Blessed with a sharp mind and a passion for learning, she attended the historic University of Havana, where she earned her Master’s in Statistics. It was during these formative years in Havana that she crossed paths with the love of her life, Dr. Joaquin Oses. The two were wed in 1953, beginning a beautiful journey of partnership that would span 59 years.
In 1956, Silvia and Joaquin made the brave decision to leave their homeland behind to build a life rooted in freedom. They started this journey in Chicago so that Joaquin could complete his fellowship at St. Mary’s Hospital. Silvia worked at the Encyclopedia Barsa – the Spanish branch of Encyclopedia Britannica as a fact-checker. After the revolution, when they realized there was no way to return to their beautiful homeland, they permanently relocated to Houston, Texas, in 1962.
In Houston, Silvia was the quiet force and anchor of the Oses family. While her husband built a prominent practice in psychiatry, Silvia dedicated her life to creating a warm, supportive home, preserving her rich Cuban culture, and raising her children with grace and strength. She became a teacher and taught Mathematics at Duchesne Academy before starting her career at HISD, which spanned over 20 years. Silvia was a woman of exceptional poise, known by friends and family for her kindness and unwavering commitment to those she loved.
Silvia was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. Joaquin Oses, and her cherished son, John Oses. The family would also like to extend their deepest gratitude to her devoted caregiver, Maria Quintanilla, as well as the exceptional staff at The Doliver – especially Kurnin, Haidy, and Mona Lisa – for their compassionate care and support.
Her memory will be forever treasured by her daughter, Sylvia Oses Spivey, and her husband, Randy; her grandsons, Zachary and Lance; her niece, Dr. Maria Souto, her husband Peter, and their children – Peter and Victoria; her nephew Frank Souto, and a host of lifelong friends, and extended family members who were blessed to know her light.
Rest in peace, Silvia. Your grace, love, and legacy live on.
