Skylar Mercier Walker Gallow, affectionately known as “Bear (a nod to her mom’s nickname being Momma Bear at her previous place of employment)”, was a shining star of creativity and uniqueness. She left the stage of life to be with her heavenly Father on March 2, 2025, at the young age of 12. Born on January 24, 2013, in Houston, TX, Skylar's entrance into the world was like a spectacular opening night. Her teachers, friends and family were the cornerstone of her life, and she shared with them an unbreakable bond that was evident in her every action and deed. Skylar's presence in their lives was a source of constant joy and inspiration.
Known for her born-again Christian faith-filled spirit and her ability to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary, Skylar started her school journey at Oaks Elementary. She was a part of a plethora of organizations, awarded countless accolades, was the star of the show as Miss Hannigan in the play Annie Jr. and may or may not have been the reason for changing the school rules due to an in school incident (we love you Oaks Staff and PTO!). She continued her journey at Timberwood Middle School as a 6th grader. She wasn't just any student; she was the one who could make a peer feel included and who turned frowns upside down effortlessly. Skylar was an active member of AVID and P.A.W.S., where she honed her academic skills with the precision of a master seamstress working on her latest fashion creation.
Speaking of fashion, Skylar's sense of style was as unique as her radiant personality. She could rock the French horn in the school band while wearing so many bracelets and necklaces that would make even the most seasoned fashionistas turn their heads. In her free time, Skylar was the queen of CapCut videos, her edits so sleek and her transitions so smooth that even the app's developers were taking notes.
Dancing was another of Skylar's passions, and she moved with the kind of rhythm that would make even the best of us feel like we had two left feet. Her drawings, vibrant and full of life, were like looking into a kaleidoscope of her soul—colorful, bright, and endlessly imaginative. In her drawings, she captured the essence of her dreams, her pencil a wand that brought forth visions of beauty and imagination. Her bedroom, although consistently a mess, was filled with miscellaneous bric-a-brac that she was able to transform into masterpieces. She was a commissioned painter, as she had people paying for her art. And let's not forget her Roblox adventures, where she was the master architect of her own digital universe, creating worlds that were as inventive as they were inclusive.
To say Skylar was creative is an understatement. She could find a hundred uses for combining a piece of paper, some glue and a random item and could make you believe that each creation was the invention of the century. Her faith was the compass that guided her, and her selflessness was her superpower. The only time she was ever known to be selfish was when it came down to her own food but she had no problem spending mom’s money to buy her friends snacks (Again, we love you Oaks Elementary faculty and PTO!). She was not the friend who would give you her last piece of gum, but she was the friend that would give you one of her stuffed animals or a drawing/painting of hers. She never saw race, color, creed, or disabilities. She was the kid that set the bar high and you couldn’t help being a better version of yourself because of her.
As we bid farewell to “Bear”, let's not dwell on the silence her absence leaves, but rather the symphony of memories she gifted us. Though our hearts may be heavy, let us not be burdened by grief. For Skylar's journey continues beyond the veil, her spirit free to soar in the embrace of eternity. We are blessed to have known her, to have loved her, and to have been a part of her all-too-short journey on this Earth. Although we still have no answers to her unexpected and sudden death, take comfort that she was happy, she didn’t suffer and that she is with her Father in Heaven.
So, here's to Skylar, our pint-sized hero, whose legacy isn't measured by years but by the countless smiles she left in her wake. May we all find comfort in the laughter she inspired and the Christian faith and love she shared so generously. Skylar, you may have exited stage left, but your show will go on forever in our hearts. With a standing ovation from your loving family: mother and father Jessica Gallow and Jermaine Mercier-Walker, brother De’veron Walker, sister Kaley Walker, maternal aunt Carol Boutte (Ronald Boutte), maternal uncle Richard Dominique, maternal uncle Peter Dominick (Cheryl Dominick), maternal uncle Michael Dominick, maternal uncle Timothy Dominique, paternal grandfather Terry Mercier (Angela Mercier), paternal aunt Tierra Bonner (Tryicelyn Bonner), paternal grandmother Bettye Johnson (Nate Johnson), paternal aunt Ericka Demons (Tony Demons) paternal great-grandmother Mary Garrett, (paternal great grandfather d.
