

Stanton Pollard Fischer, M.D. passed away peacefully at his beloved home in Houston on Saturday, the 13th of August 2016. He was born on the 2nd of October 1928 in Omaha, Nebraska, to Jean Bechtel and George G. Fischer, M.D.
Stan grew up in DuQuin, Illinois and later moved to Wilmette, Illinois where he graduated from Northwestern University. During this time, he met Marie Augusta Freeman, whom he married in 1949. They moved to Philadelphia where he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School and immediately entered into the United States Army for his internship and residency. The family was stationed at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas; Bremerhaven, Germany and Fort Benning, Georgia. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Stan moved to Houston, where he and his wife, Marie, raised their five daughters.
He enjoyed an illustrious career at the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, serving as a Chairman of the Board from 1979-1983 and later as Kelsey-Seybold’s first Medical Director. During his 40 years at the Clinic, he continued his much loved role as a physician in the Pulmonology Department.
Stan was President of the Texas Lung Association, a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, and Fellow of the American College of Physicians and an Elder at Memorial Drive Presbyterian. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge Post #1189 and the Arabia Shrine Temple, where he enjoyed driving the “Red Racers” in the Motor Corps. Stan volunteered many years in the Office of Disability Adjudication and Review, as well as in the City of Houston Health Clinics.
He received the Army Commendation Medal, Alumni Service Award from the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine, and the Laureate Award from the Texas Chapter of the American College of Physicians.
Stan is preceded in death by his parents and his brother. He is survived by his wife, Marie Freeman Fischer; daughters, Rebecca Marie Fischer of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Elizabeth Fischer Wallace and husband Bennie H. of Cedar Creek, Texas, Anne Fischer McCormack and husband Daniel J. of Dallas, Texas, Suzanne Fischer Wendorf and husband Thomas of Houston and Marie Fischer Maurice and husband Robert of Cypress, Texas; fourteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express deep appreciation to Stan’s faithful and caring caregivers, Jamie Sanchez and Christina Gonzalez.
A memorial service to celebrate Stan’s life is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Saturday, the 27th of August in the chapel of Memorial Drive Presbyterian, 11612 Memorial Drive, Houston, where Rev. Rick Myers, Associate Pastor of Caring Ministries, is to officiate.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed to the Arabia Shrine Hospital Benefit, P.O. Box 420549 Houston, TX 77242, to benefit the Shriners Hospital for Children or the Houston Food Bank, 535 Portwall Street Houston, TX 77029.
