Stella Corzo

It is with profound sadness that the Gamboa family announces the passing of Stella Corzo, our loving and dedicated grandmother, mother, matriarch, and friend to all whose lives she touched.

She passed away peacefully at our family home in Houston, Texas on June 19th, 2023, at the age of 89. Born in Santiago de Cali, Colombia, on September 25, 1933 to parents Carlina and Luis Ernesto Florez, she is survived by her daughter Maydee and her granddaughter Stephanie, and her son William and Pepe her sister Cecilia. Stella married at age 16 to Alirio Gamboa, who she shared a loving, young, first love with, until their separation a few years later. As a single mother raising her two children, she would work tirelessly to save up money in order to move abroad and establish roots in the land of opportunity, in search of a better life for her future generations.

At age 36, Stella would travel across the sea into the unfamiliar and foreign land of the United States, and although inexperienced with the English language, she quickly adapted and thrived in New York City with her strength and perseverance. Years later, once she had saved enough to do so, she would bring her children to live with her. Throughout her life, she would become the founder of the first Freemasons Sorority Lodge for Latin Women in New York City, became a New York Lion member, grew as a spiritual leader and opened a metaphysics center in Houston (Nuevos Horizontes, or New Horizons), always demonstrating love, strength, and perseverance to her friends and family.

Stella was a woman always devoted to the well-being of her family, friends, community, and strangers alike, involving herself in many memberships and fellowships dedicated to the assistance and goodwill towards others. In this search of goodwill towards mankind, she would go on to fall in love and marry Pedro Corzo, with whom she would spend many years of her life with until his passing in 2005.

She lived a full life, always in search of adventure, travels, and knowledge, and was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and mentor to those she loved. Always ready to help anyone who came to her door seeking guidance, her spirituality and strong faith will be unmatched and deeply missed. Highly skilled with gardening and an amazing green thumb, she was able to garden and grow almost the impossible. Above all, she loved her family and friends and served them well. She will be extremely missed and forever in our hearts.

Please join us in a remembrance and celebration of Stella’s life, which will be held at Garden Oaks Funeral Home, 13430 Bellaire Boulevard, Houston, TX 77083, on Sunday, July 16th, 2023 from 4pm-8pm. Es con profunda tristeza la familia Gamboa anuncia el fallecimiento de Stella Corzo, nuestra adorada y dedicada madre, abuelita, matriarca y amiga de todos aquellos que conoció.

Falleció en su sueño, en nuestra casa familiar en Houston, Texas el 19 de Junio de 2023, a la edad de 89 años. Nació en Santiago de Cali, Colombia, el 25 de Septiembre de 1933, sus padres Carlina y Luis Ernesto Flórez. La sobreviven su hija Maydee y su nieta Stephanie, sus hijos William y Pepe, su hermana Cecilia. Stella se casó a los 16 años con Alirio Gamboa, con quien compartió un amoroso y joven primer amor, hasta que se separaron unos años después. Como madre soltera criando a sus dos hijos, trabajaría incansablemente para ahorrar dinero con el fin de mudarse al extranjero y establecer raíces en la tierra de las oportunidades, en busca de una vida mejor para sus futuras generaciones.

A los 36 años, Stella viajaría a nuevas y desconocidas tierras, los Estados Unidos y, aunque no tenía experiencia con el idioma inglés, rápidamente se adaptó y prosperó en la ciudad de Nueva York con su fuerza y perseverancia. Años después, una vez que hubiera ahorrado lo suficiente para hacerlo, traería a sus hijos a vivir con ella. A lo largo de su vida, fundaría la primera Logia Masónica para mujeres latinas en Nueva York, fue miembro activo del Club de Leones de Nueva York, y se desarrolló como líder espiritual, creando un centro Metafísico en Houston (Nuevos Horizontes), siempre demostrando amor, superación, y fortaleza para su familia y amistades.

Stella fue una mujer siempre dedicada al bienestar de su familia, amigos, comunidad y extraños por igual, involucrándose en varias comunidades dedicadas a la ayuda y la buena voluntad hacia los demás. En esta búsqueda de buena voluntad hacia la humanidad, se enamoraría y casaría por segunda vez con Pedro Corzo, con quien pasaría muchos años de su vida hasta su fallecimiento en el 2005.

Vivió una vida plena, siempre en busca de aventuras, viajes y conocimiento, y fue una maravillosa madre, abuela y mentora de sus seres queridos. Siempre lista para ayudar a cualquiera que tocara su puerta y necesitará orientación, su espiritualidad y fe fuerte serán incomparables. Altamente hábil con la jardinería y un dedo increíble para la jardinería, pudo cultivar y crecer casi lo imposible. Sobre todo, amaba a su familia y amigos y los servía bien. Ella será extremadamente extrañada y estará por siempre en nuestros corazones.
