On August 13, 1961, in Houston, Texas, Tom and Marjorie Mathis welcomed their precious baby girl, Stephanie Kay Mathis into this world. She was the fourth child born to this union. Stephanie realized at an early age the importance of a relationship with Christ, where she walked with her big brothers Ed and Tom and big sister Sherry to Pleasantville United Methodist Church, Houston, Texas. Later in life, she continued her love for God and service through being a member of Windsor Village United Methodist Church, Houston, Texas. Stephanie strongly believed that knowledge is power. She attended Pleasantville Elementary School and graduated from E. L. Furr Senior High School in Houston, Texas. After graduation, she attended Texas Southern University, where she received her B.S. in Health and Physical Education. During her time in high school, she was a member of the volleyball and track teams. She also was often found throughout the community bouncing, throwing, kicking, or hitting a ball. She was active with the Road Dogs softball team in the community and contributed to their success. Stephanie combined her passion for sports and love for empowering the youth by dedicating (30) years; as a teacher and coach at Sam Houston High School and as a student support teacher at Westbury High School and most recently Lamar High School in Houston, Texas. No matter when or where, Stephanie found an opportunity to impact the youth and others through teaching the importance of upholding culture and investing in the community. Stephanie was the kind of person that if you met her once she would have a lasting impression. From the Pleasantville community to Furr High School to Texas Southern University to Sam Houston High School to Westbury High School to Lamar High School and through Stephanie’s business Kay Lyn Properties, LLC, the number of lives she touched and people she inspired are innumerable. The impact that she made will definitely be unforgettable. On December 12, 2016, God felt that Stephanie’s work was done on Earth as she was suddenly called home to meet her Heavenly Father and to be welcomed home by her parents and big brother, Ed. To continue her legacy, Stephanie leaves her brother, Tom Mathis III; sister Sherry Mathis-Fuller (Darrell); niece, Tracie Mathis; nephew, Cornell Mathis; close friend and business partner, Chatina De Rousselle; special children whom she cared for like her own; Cadence and Cameron Mathis, Brogan De Rousselle, Elise Shaw-Brewster, and Nicholas and Noah Mason. She will also be sorely missed by her aunt Mary Boothe-Arreola (Remigio); uncle, Jerry Keener (Dorothy), and a host of cousins, family members, colleagues, classmates, students, business associates, and clients.
