Stephen Ryan Gallagher

Stephen Ryan Gallagher, 51, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 4, 2026, in Houston, Texas, following a courageous, multi-year battle with a rare form of abdominal cancer. His final days were spent surrounded by loved ones and friends.

Stephen was born on May 27, 1975, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Gene and Priscilla Ann Gallagher. Raised in Missouri City, Texas, he was a bright and driven young man whose charisma showed early. After graduating in the top ten of his class at Dulles High School, Stephen attended Rice University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry. Endearingly nicknamed “Smiley,” he embraced college life to the fullest—playing rugby, proudly serving as Rice’s mascot Sammy the Owl, coordinating orientation week “O-Week” at Sid Richardson College, and interning with Jefferies in the downtown Houston office of their energy investment banking group.

Following his graduation from Rice, Stephen built a distinguished 30-year career as an energy investment banker. His professional journey took him from Jefferies to First Union, Wachovia, and Wells Fargo, where he rose to Managing Director before moving to London to lead Wells Fargo’s International Energy & Power Investment Banking Group. He later returned home to Houston to serve as Co-Head of the Energy & Industrials practice for FTG. Respected for his sharp intellect and creativity, Stephen was an exceptional colleague and a generous mentor for many in the industry.

Outside of work, Stephen approached his passions with genuine joy and enthusiasm. An avid collector of stamps, his greatest devotion was reserved for orchids. He served as an officer of the Houston Orchid Society and a trustee of the American Orchid Society, taking special delight in cross-pollinating new hybrid varieties and naming them after his family members. An adventurous spirit, Stephen loved traveling the world, scuba diving, salsa dancing, and cheering on his beloved Houston Texans, for whom he was a season ticket-holder for over twenty years.

Above all, Stephen was defined by his deep love for his family and friends. He was a devoted husband, and nothing in life brought him greater pride or joy than being a father to his two daughters. Whether hosting holiday gatherings, rallying friends on game days, or offering a patient ear and sage counsel, Stephen was a steady, warm anchor for those who loved him. He faced his illness with extraordinary grace, quiet humility, and an enduring optimism. True to his English heritage, Stephen showed everyone around him the real meaning of “Keep Calm and Carry On.”

Stephen is survived by his beloved wife Kate Gallagher; his cherished daughters Elizabeth and Danielle; his father Gene Gallagher and stepmother Judy; his brothers Tim Gallagher and David Gallagher and David's wife Rachel; his sister Roxanne Stanford and her husband Stuart; along with many adored nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Priscilla Ann Gallagher.

In keeping with Stephen’s wishes, the service will be an informal celebration of his life and journey. The family invites guests to dress casually.
