Steven Craig Damuth, 70, passed away on January 14, 2026, in Austin, Texas. Born on April 20, 1955, in Port Arthur, Texas, Craig lived a life defined by his unwavering dedication to nature conservation and his deep care for the people around him.
Craig's passion for the natural world began early in life. From childhood days spent fishing and birding in East Texas, to active pursuits at Houston's Lee High school, to his academic pursuits at Stephen F. Austin University—where he discovered botany and influential conservationists—his path was always guided by a profound respect for the environment. This early connection to nature would become the foundation of a lifelong mission to protect and preserve special natural places.
He began his professional journey by building a team of videographers to create Nature Viewing, a website designed to raise awareness about nature and generate proceeds for land acquisition. This innovative approach combined Craig's love of nature photography and videography with his commitment to conservation. Every frame captured through his lens served a greater purpose: supporting efforts to safeguard the landscapes he cherished.
Craig went on to serve as Founder and Treasurer of the Malcolm C. Damuth Foundation for the remainder of his career. Under his leadership, the foundation expanded its reach and impact, nurturing new conservation-oriented programs that supported projects across Texas and beyond. His business acumen and strong ties within the conservation community enabled meaningful collaborations that left lasting marks on countless ecosystems. Early efforts working closely with his father and Houston Audubon led to the creation of two natural jewels north of Houston, Damuth and Winters Bayou sanctuaries.
His influence extended far beyond state lines. Craig actively supported conservation work in the American tropics through partnerships with organizations such as American Bird Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, The Nature Conservancy, Gulf Coast Bird Conservancy, and many others. His contributions helped protect vital habitats and species across diverse regions.
While Craig's professional accomplishments were significant, those who knew him best remember him for his warmth, generosity, and sincere care for others. He found joy in visiting with friends and neighbors in Austin, where he built lasting relationships rooted in mutual respect and shared values. Whether discussing conservation strategies or simply enjoying good conversation, Craig brought a passionate spark to every interaction.
Craig was predeceased by his mother Gene Doris Pickett Damuth; father Malcolm Charlie Damuth; and brother Keith Stewart Damuth.
His legacy lives on through the lands he helped protect, the organizations he strengthened with his vision and support, and the many lives he touched along the way. We will miss his unyielding care for nature, his ability to find hope in what matters most, and above all, the kindness he extended so freely.
May Craig Damuth's memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspiration to all who continue the work he held so dear.
