Sue was born on February 12, 1936 in Beaumont, Texas. She was the daughter of Sue Gravett and Lowell Burton. Following the untimely death of her mother, she was adopted by her father's younger brother, R.E. (Pat) Burton and his wife Pauline Sims Burton of Houston. She grew up in a loving home and created wonderful friendships through her days at Poe Elementary, Lanier Jr. High and Lamar High School (*53). Sue graduated from Baylor University (*57) where she was an active member of the Athenians (now Kappa Kappa Gamma). Most importantly, she fell in love and married Robert B. Powell on April 19, 1957 at South Main Baptist Church.
They raised their three children in Houston. They were members of Tallowood Baptist Church. She was a humble servant, looking to meet needs of others, but never wanting to be in the spotlight.
Over many years, she impacted organizations throughout Houston with her volunteer work and her kindness. She kept books for the nonprofit Day Care Center. She was the head chaperone for the Memorial High School Markettes - attending 70 straight football games and icing over 7,000 sodas to provide for the drill team members. She enjoyed years as a docent helping history come alive at Sam Houston Park. She was a faithful member of the Jr. Current Literature Club and enjoyed her many friends there. Known for her humility and warmth, she was always quick with a word of encouragement.
Sue enjoyed pilates, yoga, sailing, boating, fishing, skiing (both water and snow) and tennis. She lived a life of adventure with her husband, exploring and uncovering treasures found through genealogy research. She delighted in family gatherings and was always intentional with each member. Her love for the Lord has made a generational impact on her children and her grandchildren.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Especially her survivors: her husband, Robert Powell; her children, Glenn (Janna) Powell, Peggy Powell, Fran (John) Ryan; her grandchildren, Brooks (Emily) Powell, Beth (Mike) McGee, Will (Lane) Ryan and Cade (Lexy) Ryan; and precious great grandchildren Harper, Taylor and Asher Powell, Lace and Lily McGee, and Eleanor Ryan. She is survived by her sister Carolyn (Carlos) Hamilton and many beloved nieces and nephews.
