Brentie Sue Stuart passed away on Tuesday, December 28, 2021. She was born on Ground Hog Day, February 2, 1930 in Dalhart, Texas. The only child of George E. Thompson and Vivian McFarland Thompson, she was named after her Aunt Brent, but Sue is the name that all her family and friends called her.
In 1936 at age 6, the family moved to Lubbock to find work. George joined his older brother in a furniture business and Vivian worked in a dress shop. Sue graduated with a degree in Accounting from Texas Tech and was the first person in her family to earn a college degree. While studying at Texas Tech, she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and most importantly, met her husband of 56 years, John Austin Stuart, on a blind date. They married in 1952 and were blessed with a son and a daughter.
John was employed with AMOCO Oil Company and because of his job transfers, they were blessed to have lived in many places and made wonderful, life-long friends along the way. The most memorable and longest stay was the move to Anchorage, Alaska in 1964, just six months after the Good Friday earthquake. It was a big leap of faith for her to move 4,000 miles from family and friends, but Sue embraced the adventure. She joined the work force in 1965 initially to pay for the family to return to “the States” in the summer as the company only provided transportation home once every two years. Sue worked for ten years including positions in the accounting department at Alaska Methodist University and office manager at the accounting firm, Cooper & Lybrand.
John and Sue enjoyed traveling to new places and visiting family and friends. John retired from AMOCO in 1989 and they moved to Fulshear, TX. While living there, Sue had tremendous pleasure spoiling their four granddaughters. John passed away in 2008 and Sue relocated to League City in 2012 to be closer to family. During this time, she was blessed with five great-grandchildren.
Sue was active in community and church in every place that she lived, including being a docent at the Alaska Zoo. Sue was an avid bridge player. She was a great animal lover. Dogs were her constant companions from the time she was six-years old. At the senior community where she last lived, Sue with her dog, Icy, by her side, were a constant familiar sight.
Left to treasure her memories are… Son: John A Stuart, Jr and wife, Jill Hayes of Islamorada, FL; Daughter: Lynn Irvine and husband, Brian of Seabrook, TX; Granddaughters: Jennifer Stuart, Kelly Farris and husband, Lee, Katelyn Barnhart and husband, Jordan and Hallie Irvine; Great Grandchildren: Peighton, Charlotte and Jace Barnhart and Lexi and Tyler Farris; and finally, her devoted canine companion, Icy.
Sue was preceded in death by her husband, John Stuart, and her parents, George and Vivian Thompson.
