Susan Duncan Wise passed away after a brief illness on Tuesday, the 27th of April 2021. She was born on the 16th of September 1941, to Vernon and Mildred Treadway Duncan in Little Rock, Arkansas. She married Dr. Wesley Samuel Wise on the 31st of December 1966, and they made their home in Brownwood, Texas. He preceded her in death. Susan then made her home in Houston, Texas.

Susan was dedicated to her church, Saint Paul Orthodox Christian Church, where she served on the Altar Guild and decorated the church for all the holidays. Susan was also Saint Paul’s unofficial greeter, making every stranger her friend.

As a devoted student of history, Susan was an active member of the Lady Washington Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and The National Society of The Colonial Dames in the State of Texas. Susan also served as a docent with the Bayou Bend Docent Organization for many years. She was a long-time board member of the Brown County Museum of History.

As a member of Chi Omega Fraternity, Susan served her Sisters as an active alumna during her years in Brownwood, as a member and long time board member of the Houston Chi Omega Alumnae Association, and as a member of the Psi Zeta Chapter of Chi Omega Fraternity House Corporation Board.

Susan was filled with an innate kindness and grace which touched so many people in profound ways. She always wanted you to feel welcome and loved. She had a tender heart for little animals, giving a loving home for many of God’s creatures. Her sweet nature and genuine happiness for every person she knew was uplifting to all of us. She was especially beloved by her grandchildren who called her Mimmi or Stinkbug. She was known to have fed them ice cream and Coke for breakfast.

Susan is survived by her daughters, Geyer and her husband, Erik Dybesland, Sheffield and her husband Brad Southall; her son, Hilton and his wife Amber Johnson Wise; and her grandchildren, Wesley, Madden, Finn, Jiles, Duncan, Beckett, Brinkley, Holden, Mary Margaret, Johnson and Knox.

To that Susan was the unofficial greeter at St. Paul Orthodox Church and each person became a friend is very true. Susan was mine. I was blessed and honored to serve on Altar Guild with her and she taught me many things about what I had to do. I also taught her grandson Finn and sometimes Duncan at Church School. Memory Eternal. May you be joyously reunited with Dr. Wise.
