

She was a creative and free-spirited child. And that carried over to adulthood. She married her high school sweetheart Bill Cooper and to this union was born two sons, Kerry and Horace. She continued to be a vivacious and energetic ‘rolling stone’ as she began a teaching career of forty years. She taught several different subjects on all levels from Kindergarten to Elementary to Secondary. She was a passionate teacher, dedicated to her students, and committed to education. She earned three degrees: a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Texas Southern, a Master of Education in Reading and Language Arts from Sam Houston, and a PhD in Education from Trinity. She leaves her sons Kerry and Horace to continue the good fight, also her three grandchildren: Jayme Cooper-Bowen, Rachel Cooper, and Kerry Reyes Cooper, and one great-granddaughter Remington Elijah Bowen. She is survived by her four sisters Opal Boykin, Marilyn (James) Hamilton, Shirley (Lee) McGowen-Hampton, Laurene LeGall-LaFonte, and Lourene Williams-Medlow, and one brother Marion (Betty) Johnson. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. Sylvia’s parents, O.W. and Virgie Porter-Johnson, her brother Alvin Porter, her sister Alvie Porter-Drenon, and her husband Bill Cooper, preceded her in death.
