Ta-Shen “Tom” Su passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife of 56 years and his three children on January 12, 2024. He was 90 years old. He demonstrated courage and faith in God while dealing with cancer and subsequent complications.
Ta-Shen was born on September 11, 1933 to Cheng-Huey and Mae Yang Su in HsinChu, Taiwan. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters: Mei-Quey Shih and Mai-Shian Liu and brother Ta-Shan Su. He is survived by his loving wife, Amy Her-Mei Su, and his children: Ruby Sun (Adam), Vicki Su Pickard (Robert), and Alex Su (Jordan). He is also survived by four sisters: Iou Chen, Tzu-Jen Lin (Fong-Huey), Wuu-Tsai Wu (Der-San), and Ming-Yeng Tang (Jue Lin); brother Ta-Hai Su (Hsu-Fong); cousin Shun-Mei Lim (Ming); sisters-in-law May Yen (C.C.) and Chang-Mei Chiu (C.Y.); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ta-Shen was very proud of his grandchildren: Victoria Bailey (Caleb), Marshal Leach (Katie Doyal, fiancée), James Sun, Elisha Su, Abraham Su, Brooklynn Su, Elijah Su, Emilyn Sun, and Esther Su. He especially enjoyed being “A-Tzo” (Great Grandfather) to William Gray Chng-Ta Bailey, his great grandson.
Ta-Shen graduated from Cheng-Kung University in Tainan, Taiwan with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He came to the United States to further his education at the University of Illinois-Champaign. In 1962 he received his Master of Science in Civil Engineering and began working in Chicago.
In the winter of 1966, Ta-Shen met the love of his life, Amy Her-Mei Li. The two were married that summer, and soon had three children (within three years). While in Chicago, they grew close with a Christian couple, T.D. and Sue Lin, who befriended, prayed for, and took them to church.
In 1974, God brought Tom and Amy to work in Houston, and drew them to attend West Memorial Baptist Church, where they accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior and were baptized. While under the guidance of Harold Tate, they felt a calling to share Christ’s love with more Taiwanese people. They launched a Bible study at home which grew into the Formosan Presbyterian Church in Greater Houston, the first Taiwanese church in the area. In recent years, the two have been blessed to serve and be served at Living Waters Chinese Christian Church of Sugar Land.
Tom was initially diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1988. By God’s grace, he survived multiple procedures and hospitalizations. Complications from the treatments caused him to retire early in 1994. Through it all, he continued to serve Christ with his family through the church and in the community. Despite sustained disabilities, he never complained; rather, he thanked God for healing and strength. Eventually, a recurrence of the cancer would end his life on this earth.
We thank God for so many caring and supportive family and friends from the church and community. We are truly grateful for all who have called, prayed, and visited over the years. We sincerely appreciate each of you and treasure your lovingkindness.
The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation in Ta-Shen Su's name to Living Waters Chinese Christian Church in Sugar Land in lieu of flowers.
