TERENCE PENICK TIMMONS
August 12, 1950 – September 21, 2016
Terence Penick Timmons, age 66, passed away on September 21, 2016. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, September 30, at the Golding Chapel, Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Avenue. Interment will be in the Christ Church Cathedral columbarium.
A native Houstonian, Terry was the son of Patrick F. Timmons and Virginia (Penick) Timmons, both now deceased. He attended Will Rogers Elementary School, Lanier Middle School, and graduated from Lamar High School.
Throughout his school years, Terry was active in Boy Scouts and earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest award in Scouting. His love of the outdoors led him to serve as a camp counselor in Maine for several summers and to attend Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. He was also a willing participant in family fishing vacations to Minnesota and Canada.
Following graduation, he enrolled in The University of Texas at Austin, his mother’s alma mater, and studied architectural engineering, earning a B.S. degree in 1972. At UT, he was active in Alpha Phi Omega, a service fraternity, and was a proud member of Longhorn Singers. He was also named to Phi Eta Sigma, a national freshmen honorary scholastic fraternity, and was a member of the UT Engineering Council and Chi Epsilon engineering fraternity. He often reminisced about his experiences as a waiter in the dining room of SRD (Scottish Rite Dorm) at the University.
After earning his degree, Terry did graduate study at UT, but left to begin working at a Houston real estate firm.
In the late 1980’s, he moved to Charlotte, NC, close to the area where his Penick and Morrison ancestors had lived. There he was involved in real estate and did contract engineering jobs. He also met several Morrison descendants at family reunions held at the Rocky River Presbyterian Church in Concord, NC. His great-great grandfather, Rev. Daniel Allen Penick, was the church’s minister for more than 30 years, serving until his death in 1870.
After Terry returned to Houston, he held a variety of jobs until health concerns forced him to quit working. Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 17, he nevertheless lived life to the fullest, charming many along the way.
Terry was an avid fan of the Texas Longhorns, having inherited a football gene from his mother, and freely offered his opinions on plays, players and coaches! He especially enjoyed watching games at Little Woodrow’s in Midtown where he lived.
He also enjoyed entertaining, shopping at Central Market for good buys, making enchiladas for his friends and family, and singing whenever an opportunity arose. He especially loved the hymns and music of the Christmas season and Easter. For a number of years, he served as a lay reader at Trinity Episcopal Church, was on occasion an usher at church services, and particularly enjoyed the times he hosted the coffee time at church on Sundays.
Terry is survived by a sister, Claire J. Timmons of Washington, D.C.; a brother, Patrick F. (Tim) Timmons, Jr., and his wife Sharon of Houston; and a niece, Susan Marks and her husband Matthew of Long Island City, NY.
The family would like to thank the staff of Memorial City Health and Rehabilitation Center for their care and concern and give special thanks to Terry’s doctors, particularly cardiologist Dr. Michele Sartori and his colleagues at St. Luke’s Hospital.
