Thelma was born on March 4, 1924 to Wilhelm and Amelia (nee Haude) Theiss in Spring, TX. On a blind date in 1943, Thelma met Glenn Smith, a US Army military policeman. They immediately hit it off and married shortly thereafter on July 17, 1943. Together, Thelma and Glenn had four children, Darwin, Adrian, Kevin, and Leah.
Thelma loved to travel. During her lifetime, Thelma visited all 50 states, various countries across Europe and South America, and many islands in the Caribbean. She loved spending time fishing and crabbing at Port Bolivar. But, most of all she loved spending time with family and friends.
Thelma was a master seamstress and created many beautiful, hand-sewn quilts to include quilts for all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
For 96 years, Thelma graced this world with generosity, humility, and love like no other. Thelma was a longtime supporter of the US military. She was not only a military spouse, but also a mother to two US Army Soldiers (sons Adrian and Kevin Smith), a grandmother to two US Army Soldiers (grandsons Michael and Joshua Goldsmith), and great-grandmother to one US Army Soldier (great-granddaughter Hannah Aasgaard).
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters, two brothers, her husband Glenn, and infant son Darwin Glenn. She is survived by son Adrian Smith and wife Cathy, son Kevin Smith, daughter Leah Menchaca and husband Ruben, seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
