Theodora “Betty “ Davis left us to join her beloved “Red” in heaven on December 12, 2014. Betty was born in Galveston on October 18, 1927. She grew up in Houston and attended Jefferson Davis High School where upon graduation, she chose to pursue a career in Nursing. During her nurse training, she met a young medical student, Earl Dwane “Red” Davis. The couple married on January 19, 1946 and were blessed with thirty-nine years together, during that time they would build a medical practice, raise five children and touch the lives of many.
Earl Dwane “Red” Davis, M.D. preceded his “Bets” in death 29 years ago and remained the love of her life. Betty was also predeceased by her parents: James & Flora Hicks; brother, James Hicks, Jr., son, John Kevin Davis, and great grandson, Shane Keith. Betty is survived by her sons: Earl Dwane Davis, Jr., and Richard Michael Davis; her daughters: Cheryl Anne Davis and Katherine Elizabeth Smith. Affectionately known as “Mamma B”, Betty also leaves behind 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. They were her joy and her greatest pleasure was to sit on the porch of the family beach house in Galveston surrounded by family.
A recently discovered quote written by her youngest son, John Kevin, describes the legacy Mamma B and Daddy Red left to generations of Davis’ to follow: “Thanks to the finest people I’ve ever known and who deeply cared and dedicated themselves to the welfare of their patients and children. Because of them, we Davis kids are at least trees in the forest, rather than just leaves.”
A memorial service will be held at her gravesite in Brookside Memorial Park at 10AM on Monday, December 22nd. For those desiring, memorial contributions can be made to Bethany Methodist Church, 3511 Linkwood, Houston, TX 77025.
