Trent Garfield affectionally known as “Pappa Bear” was born on May 2, 1957, in Manhattan NY to Mamie and Edward Garfield. The family relocated to Philadelphia, PA when he was a young boy. He began his education through Archdiocese of Philadelphia School System and completed his studies in the United States Army. Having a desire to learn more in his professional field he briefly attended Burlington County Community College.
On April 20, 1977, he joined the United States Army and worked as a military police officer earning badges as a Sharpshooter and M-16 Marksman. Trent was discharged on April 18, 1980 and was able to fulfill his military obligation by joining the reserves until the completion of his stint on April 18, 1983, discharging for the final time. He was extremely intelligent, driven and most times a work-aholic. After his time in the United Stated Army Trent began working as a computer software programmer (self-taught) consultant. Colleagues referred to him as a “trailblazer” in the computer programming industry as there were very few blacks or black men who worked in his field. Sometime around 1988 Trent relocated to Houston, TX and decided he would call it home. With over 30 years of experience, he worked for many fortune 500 companies including IBM, COMPAQ, Raytheon, and many others.
Trent was a visionary. His mind never rested. He was always thinking of ways to create a legacy for his children and family. As if his regular 9-5 job wasn’t enough to keep him busy, he owned several small companies with a desire to provide opportunities and life experiences for his children, with his main purpose to provide security.
He was a giving man who loved his children, family and made countless sacrifices for them. Many depended on him and those who knew him knew that it was difficult for him to say no. He often said that he could push forward for others but had a hard time pushing for himself. He was a nurturer, enjoyed sappy romance stories, played golf, watched tennis, enjoyed traveling, and loved to listen to jazz – his favorite artists were Brian Culbertson and Boney James. He will be missed.
Trent was preceded in death by his parents Edward “Pop” and Mamie “Ma”; brothers: Sharon, Clinton, Edward “Slim” Jr., and Eugene.
Trent leaves to cherish his memory, his children: Sheri, Trent Jr., Torin (Valerie), Anecshia “Tilly” (Willie), Anthony, Donti (Chedon), and Trevor; two brothers: Thaddeus “Ted” (Valerie) and Timmie; six sisters: Ellyn, Pamula, Virginia, Donna, Suzanne and Marion; a Sister in Law: Roschael, fourteen grandchildren: Ronald Jr, Ramair, DaShauun, Kayla, William, JyMecia, Bailey, Jace, Ay’den, Jyonni, Trent “Jet” III, A’mir, Troy, and Tessa; a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
