Vicky Lynn Lykes, beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away peacefully on Thursday, the 1st of October 2026. Vicky, affectionately known as “Mimi” was born on the 17th of June 1942, in Sioux City, Iowa. She was the fifth child of the late Loren McCampbell and Edith Dowling. Vicky and her five siblings were raised in San Antonio by their aunt and uncle, Margaret Ann and Virgil Joseph Keefe.
Vicky met her future husband, Frederick Freeman Lykes, while attending Edison High School in San Antonio. The two married on the 28th of January 1961, in San Antonio before moving to Galveston where Fred attended the University of Texas Medical Branch and obtained his Medical Doctorate in 1966. Fred and Vicky moved their young family to Victoria where Fred established a solo private dermatology practice.
Vicky’s calling was to be a loving wife and mother, who raised her three sons to be successful husbands, fathers and businessmen. Her selflessness and care for others were always present. She was the biggest supporter of her children and anything they were involved with in school or life. She also disciplined with a heavy hand and was legendary for her expert use of the “wooden spoon,”which struck fear in any family member who had gotten out of line.
She was active in the St. Martin’s Episcopal Church mahjong group who would meet every Monday. She was a member of the Junior League of Victoria and participated in the League’s various plays for over ten years. She also was an active member of the Nazareth Academy, Our Lady of Victory and St. Joseph Booster Clubs.
Vicky moved to Houston in 2005 to be closer to her youngest grandchildren and was a significant influence in their lives. She rarely missed a sporting event, school activity or other events of her grandchildren. She taught her grandchildren the Golden Rule of treating others as one wishes to be treated and lived this rule every day of her life. Her love, guidance and endless support will be missed by her friends and family.
She was predeceased by her parents, Loren McCampbell and Edith Dowling, Margaret Ann Keefe and Virgil Keefe; and siblings, Wallace H. McCampbell, Dee L. Philips, Bobbette A. Vollmer, and Loren H. McCampbell Jr.
Vicky is survived by her sister, Penny Renken; her three sons, Frederick Freeman Lykes, Jr., Michael David Lykes and wife Kathleen Clark Lykes, and James Richard Lykes and wife Katherine Seinsheimer Lykes.
