Vilma Stein, a devoted woman, mother, grandmother, and wife, passed away on April 30. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Dr. Fernando Stein; their daughter, Melanie; her son-in-law, Nathan Rodgers; and their sons, Gabriel and Christian. Vilma died in Houston, surrounded by her family. She had lived in Houston since the winter of 1975. Vilma served on the Texas Children’s Auxiliary for 7 years and was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church.
An accomplished pastry chef, she became known in her circle for her legendary sweets. She was an outstanding porcelain painter, a hobby she developed in Houston. She was a friend of friends and a loyal server to her neighborhood.
She was originally from Guatemala City, Guatemala, and became a U.S. citizen. Her extended family is still in Guatemala, including her brothers, Rodolfo Brolo and his wife, Lucrecia, Ricardo Brolo and his wife, Lorena, and Gustavo Brolo and his wife, Carlota. Her brothers and sisters-in-law, Dr. Eduardo Stein and his wife, Myrna, Alvaro Stein and his wife, Maria Jose, and Isabel Stein de Mendoza and her husband, Oscar Mendoza, all traveled from Guatemala to show their love for Vilma, support the family, and attend her funeral.
