“Big Grandma”
October 5, 1931 – September 9, 2026
Vina Gertrude Avera, affectionately known to her family as “Big Grandma,” passed away on September 9, 2026, at the age of 94.
Vina was married to Raymond L. Avera. Together they raised their son, Edward Buck, and daughter, Debbie King. She spent most of her life at her home on Saginaw Drive north of houston.
Vina performed painting work at Citizens Hospital and Bellaire Hospital for her work. She loved painting at the hospitals and worked at bellaire hospital until she retired At home, she enjoyed gardening, yardwork, and household projects.
Her Christian faith was an important part of her life.
She carefully preserved her family’s history through handwritten calendars, photographs, family albums, and VHS recordings. An entire wall in her home was devoted to albums and tapes documenting birthdays, trips, holidays, and other family occasions.
Christmas was one of her favorite holidays. Each year, she selected the largest Christmas tree she could fit inside her home, trimming the top when necessary just to fit the tree into the house. She was a dedicated women to making sure her family and loved ones would come together for family gatherings.
Vina’s grandchildren, Kandee Roxsande King, Raymond King, and Joseph “Joe” King, were an important part of her life. She was also blessed to know her great-grandson Gunner, Raymond’s son.
Vina was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond L. Avera; her son, Edward Buck and her daughter, Debbie King, and many other relatives.
Her memory and legacy continue through Kandee, Raymond, Joe, Gunner, and the many relatives and friends who knew and loved her.
