Virgil Britt passed from this life on August 13, 2021 at the age of 72 at his home in Montgomery, Texas. Though he battled serious medical issues in recent years, he faced these challenges with the same patient determination that he used in every facet of his life.
He was born to Virgil and Helen Britt on December 28, 1948 in Wichita, Kansas. After Virgil graduated from Brownsville High School, he worked his way from Florida to Michigan back to Texas where he ended up working at Southwestern Bell. At Southwestern Bell, he rose through the ranks from the mail room to management, won the Rider Service Certificate of Merit, and he was well respected by his peers. Virgil made significant contributions to the successful implementation of local number portability and was an instrumental part of the team that developed and implemented the 911 system we all use today.
Working at Southwestern Bell was where Virgil met the love of his life, Jewell. He was a persistent suitor who used his mailroom perks to look Jewell up and send her notes and flowers. Virgil and Jewell were wed on April 6, 1973 and shared 48 wonderful years together. They had two children, Kristy and Stacey.
Virgil was a man who knew a lot about a lot of things. He found great pleasure in building computers, woodworking, traveling, fishing, listening to music and gardening. He had the ability to do just about anything he set his mind to - and do it well.
Virgil was preceded in death by his father, Virgil and his mother, Helen.
Virgil is survived by his wife, Jewell, his daughter, Kristy Hubing and her husband, Matt, his daughter, Stacey Backhus and her husband, Jeff. His grandchildren, Alexander and Nicholas Ensey, Brooklyn and Ashlynn Backhus and EJ and Chloe Abbott. His sister, Linda Perkins, his sister-in-law, Janice Cantrell and her husband, Don, his brother-in-law, James West and his wife, Arrie, his brother-in-law Kirk West and his wife, Maggie, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family will receive friends for a visitation on Thursday, August 19, 2021 from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM at Brookside Funeral Home, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, TX 77039. A funeral service will follow and begin promptly at 2:30 PM, followed by burial at Brookside Memorial Park.
