She was born on the 15th of May 1926, in Detroit, Michigan, to Charles R. and Jessie Snyder, and was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Philip C. Johnson, Jr. She is survived by her two sons and their families, Dr. Philip C. Johnson, III and his wife, Linda, their children Kara, Drew and Patrick Johnson, and Dr. Chris Johnson and his wife, Dr. Cindy Pekow, and their children Miranda and Josie Johnson.
Virginia graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in elementary education and where she joined Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She taught school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for a year before attending graduate school at the University of Michigan where she received a Master’s degree in early childhood development. She raised her two sons in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Houston, Texas, before returning to work in early childhood education for Neighborhood Centers Daycare Association of Houston, Texas. Following her service there, she taught kindergarten at Pines Presbyterian Preschool for several years. In her retirement she was an active volunteer at Memorial Assistance Ministries and sang in the church choir. She will be known and remembered for her smile, her optimism and her love of children.
Her family thanks Luisa Hernandez and her Home Instead caregivers, Franca, Bunmi and Remy for their loving care of her.
A memorial service, and celebration of her life, is to be conducted at three o’clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 30th of October, at Pines Presbyterian Church, 12751 Kimberley Drive in Houston, where the Rev. Dr. Wayne C. Eberly is to officiate.
